Not a spyderco...and I'm not a big fan of Cold Steel folders (but I think everyone knows that already) I did pick up a Cold Steel "SPIKE", and I'm impressed with it's bare bones design, comfort in the hand is great though I will add some jimping to the spine with the trusty dremel tomorrow and the spine on this thing is very thick....I like the way it cuts and penetrates, ...it's almost like having a ice pick with a cutting edge...They bill it as a neck knife...but you would have to be King Kong to conceal it as a neck knife....comes with a positive gripping sheath and works well on my waist with a paracord attachment thru the sheath holes...It is perfect for reverse pikal grip...so even Cold Steel can get something right every once and a while ;) ....Doc :D

I have one, the drop-point version (or sort of drop point, as opposed to their tanto). I like it a lot, too. Very rugged in its construction, and no worries about it coming out of that sheath, you're right.

I am not a huge guy (5'11", 175 or so) and I wore that thing as a neck knife for quite a while. It does hang down a bit, but it doesn't necessarily give itself away.

I've rotated through the Spike, CRKT Neck Peck, Benchmade TK1, Spyderco Swick as neck knives. Lately I'm with the Neck Peck again. I've even carried a Delica in a kydex fitted sheath as a neck knife before, but that's an extra step to deployment and I didn't care for that.

You should enjoy the Spike a lot. :)

peacefulJeffrey: I really like neck knives, my favorites are a Microtech Medallion (very nice but pricey) an Arclite Cuda (Darrel Ralph design) a Lightfoot design by Timberline called the Mini Pitbull, the HRT by Smith and Wesson as well as Columbia River's Bear Claw (the poor mans karambit)The spike.... I will enjoy but I'm a small guy and it is to big and will be to hard for me to conceal around the neck.....(Too bad though) as it would make a wonderful necker......Doc :D

Congrats Doc.

It just so happens that I was looking at one of those myself yesterday afternoon. We looked it up in the BRK catalog. ¼-inch thick tang, 420 steel. Looks to make a great steak knife :D , and quite inexpensive. I ended up getting the Ronin instead.

He he he, I kind of figured you'd have something to say about that. TBH, I don't know how I'll work it in. I just don't know how I can use a FB in the urban environment with shorts and a T-shirt. Seems like any way I could carry it, it would stick out like a sore thumb. :(

I think I got a first production run because it has the number 884 on the blade. I can't remember what it was but I know there was something different about the sheaths.

Ghostrider, The sheaths in the older model where wider and flat to be use primarily as a neck knife. I have several with the newer sheaths...a little lanyard (god knows you got enough of that stuff LOL) thru the sheath's holes and you have nice belt sheath...Concealment::::you gonna have to change you style of dress for that one, think outer shirt over a T or an outer vest works fine...the older type sheaths should work well as a necker....Doc :D
You got one great combative knife there bro!!!!!! Enjoy it!

Nice job Dr. :)

I have never owned a CS knife but I've been thinking about it just to see what they are like.

Got any pics of it. :D We love pics here you know...

Without pictures, this thread might as well be my exwife blabbing on about what a bastard I am.

Okay everyone,

Here's the pic you asked for.

As I have already stated. I looked at one of these yesterday and it is stout. IMHO, it would be formidable even without a sharpened edge.

Thanks for the pic Doc. :D

Aloha Doc,

I HAD one of these...gave it away to a friend of mine. Neat concept, but...ahhh, I dunno. I had one of the tanto versions. I did a double take on the Wharnie looking one...but no.

Enjoy your new toy Doc.

God bless and take care

I am not a CS fan myself but also find the Spike a look at sometime . Rick bought the Wharnclff style , a fave of his , seems to be built good , but still can't get past their bombastic catalogs . Not much there for a lefty , anybody ever try the new Recon 1 ?

Enjoy your new knife. I am considering ordering one, also, but I've been thinking about those who mention the size is a bit large for neck carry. I have to be a bit dressed up at work so it's not like I can wear a baggy casual shirt or sweatshirt and hide it. I'm not supposed to carry weapons at work and my job has much interaction with patients so whatever I carry has to be invisible. My experience with neck knives have been unless they are very light, worn with a loose shirt(and the shirt isn't white!) and/or under 7 inches long, they will "print" or show. Last thing I need is someone asking "What is that around your neck?" The only neck knives I've been able to wear that suit my needs so far are the Emerson La Griffe and a Titanium Tiger by Newt Livesay, all others I've seen are too large or heavy
