I have a machete type knife that I came across a couple of years ago that I absolutely swear by. It is a Cold Steel HTC Gurkha Kukri with a 15 inch blade made with Carbon V. Now most of Cold Steel's Gurhkas are 12 inch. And don't confuse this one with the light duty LTC Gurkha. This 15 inch monster demands respect and really makes a good companion for any of my outdoor Spyders. Now for what I use machetes for the CS HTC Gurkha is my darling. That is one wicked bitch of a big knife.

With this thread I actually don't really want to continue to bragg about my favorite big knife but I would like to somewhat explore the world of machetes with my Spyderco brethren ( sisters too :D ) I have heard that Martindale makes some excellent machete type knives with great blade steel. I had an Ontario machete once that I ended up tradeing after being won over by the CS HTC monster. I actually thought that the Ontario was somewhat of a respectable unit.

But especially you military or ex-military guys>> you all probably really know your machetes. OK I know that some of you are going to say that you bought a $6 unit at rip-mart and you think it works well for what you do. But come now people we are on the Spyderco Forum which is a Forum about quality knives. So let's do this machete thread justice. OK folks fire away >>>

Kershaw makes a nice one of D2. I like is mostly because of its handle being excellent for tough usage. I dont know if I can call it tactical or not as I saw a 65 year old man wearing it as a large neck knife. My cheap 8 dollar one broke on a tree, but I bought it with the intention of messing it up so I guess I was doomed to destroy it from the start.

Like Zac mentioned check out the Kershaw Outcast- It's a Ken Onion design.
Looks very nice. 16" OAL with a 10" blade made out of D2 steel. Comes with a real nice sheath. One heck of a knife for the price. Check em' out and give us your opinion!

OK So far we have Kershaw, Ka-bar, Martindale, Cold Steel, Ontario. I know there are more good companies than them. I wonder if there are any custom guys making super high quality Machetes. I would think that USA knife makers would have some of the very best ones. Martindale is British believe it or not. OK who else can we add?

Would the Woodsman's Pal count as a machete?

Blackjack Panga.

13" of convex ground 1095.

Not everyones cup of tea, but for a light Machete, it works for me. Add a Kershaw Outcast(wonderfully thick beast of a knife), and you've got all the bases covered.

Nice blades both Scott :D
I like the flowing lines of Onions designs, its like being something significant for Hawaii born knives.. Many Hawaiian knife designers seem to favour flowing lines...
Flowing as Lava flows...:D

I have a cold steel panga machete. It worked well during hurricane season here in Florida 2yrs. ago. My newest purchase was - ready? Doc's Smatchet-- No a Kabar Kukri. Nice for me! I have the Kabar Kukri. First for me as far as Kukri. I love the design. Works exrtremely well.
