The Spyderco 2001 catalog says that the Peter Herbst scales are "grey almite coated aluminum". The SFO says that they are "titanium".
Which is correct.

This was a topic of discussion around the shop I work at for a long time. We decided that the catalog went to print before the final version of the knife was done, so that's why the catalog says "titanium." It's aluminium. It's that grey finish that threw us off. The original version of the Herbst, the German made one, was titanium. It also served to reinforce my belief that the Germans don't make serrations well. The Japanese Herbst is much better in that respect, and as far as our sales go, seems to be more popular, at least in the San Dieog area.

I don't care about serrations on the original Herbst ... I have a plain one <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>
I am happy to own the only European made Spyderco (to my knowledge).
For me a Herbst Junior plain with G10 scales (and possibly compression lock) would be close to the ultimate EDC.
The catalog was printed wrong and the person who keyed up the website followed the catalog.
The orignal version was aluminum as well, it had a blue stipe on the handle and i belive ats34 steel.

I am in possession of the newer, Seki-City version. It is definitely aluminum with a grey almite finish, as published in the catalog. - SFO should be corrected.
