View Full Version : New handles for Salt series?

As some of you may know, I love my Tasman like a first born child, but I can't help but wonder what it would be like if it had handles like the D4. Now when I say "like the D4", I simply mean nested liners and better texturing. The ergonomics do not need to change (some people dislike the new style). So, does anyone know if the Great Spyder Factory plans on updating the Salt line? Any info appreciated.

The D3 is the best design. D4 is just trying to hard to be a BM!

I love the Tasman Salt design and I do not think that there is much room for improvement. I like its weight, H-1, ergonomics, handle texture pattern, cost, and looks :D

I do not see how nested liners would improve the design. It would allow for a 4-way clip but at the expense of added weight and complexity. One of the great things about the Tasman Salt is that it weighs practically nothing. I often forget that I am carrying the knife. Also, I think that the cost of the knife would go up because the design would require some sort of noncorrosive metal (titanium?) for the liners.

Sal has already stated that trying to make liners as rust proof as the H-1 blades would be prohibitively expensive, and to make them of anything less would be a step backward. Would not hold my breath waiting for it to happen. On the other hand, if you want one badly enough, there's always the option of having STR, or some other customizer, make you a ti-lined G-10 or micarta Tasman. It would certainly not be the first Salt Steve has customized. :D

Wow deacon you took the words right out of my mouth, and stated it better than I would have.

i'm just waiting for a G-10 Tasman, it seems like a no brainer as G-10 is stronger than FRN and alot grippier especially when wet.

I disagree, both the D3 and D4 ergos are far superior to BM FRN models. No contest at all.

I prefer the ergos of the D4.

If I may ask, what causes you to think the D4 is trying to be a BM?

Yes, yes, I would also like to know.

Thanks, Deacon, that's all I wanted to know. As for sending my Tasman to STR for anodized Ti liners, a matching Ti clip, and rust-colored micarta scales custom shaped to my hand...

I clearly feel the Delica outclasses the Mini-Griptilian from an ergonomic standpoint.

When you get to the Endura vs. Full Sized Griptilian... It gets to be more of a toss up for me. Both have pros and cons. The Endura will carry "flatter" in the pocket than the Grip. You do get the Axis lock on the Grip, but you do get a bigger price tag. Both have been made in a myrad of steels (Grip: 440C, M2, D2, S30V, and currently 154CM... Endura: well you all know those anyway...) As a side note, only the Mini-Grip has FULL steel liners, the full sized Grip only has partial liners... I assume the E4 has full ones. You do get a few different blade styles with the Grip, but you get the Wave on an Endura... I like both for different reasons...

I will "assume" the original poster was thinking that screw construction and steel liners, was making it more like the Grip. I don't mean to put words in their mouth, but that would be my assumption.

Back on topic, I don't mind the SALT series the way they are. I think it also gives those who don't like the transition from "3" to "4" a knife in the line up they are familiar with (Salt 1 and Pacific Salt).
