View Full Version : NGK and Chad's SUBCOM F
I see that NGK now has Chad's Subcom F in stock. But it does not appear to be the model with the AUS-8 steel yet.

If that is the case....run and I do mean run and snatch one of those up before there are none left...you'll always be able to get another in AUS 8...Doc :D

Interesting. I gotta check the prices on them there, because the SF was inexpensive to begin with, what do they cost at NGK? $5 ;)
This is good news though, NGK has software on their site that lets you see how many are left in stock, so we can actually tell if they're in stock(a common problem tracking down Chad's SF)

Just bought mine. :D
I got my brother one for his birthday recently only I got him an AUS 8 version. He's not a big knife guy but he likes it a lot.
I just bought a 420J2 one so I can buy a generation 2 one later.

I got my Generation I in my pocket as we type. It is a great little guy to open and close one handed (right or left hand) and contemplate one's place in the world.

I have both Subcoms Generation One and Two....something about #1 that I like much better, and Chad already knows what I'm about to say...it's the clip, I like the shorter clip....don't get me wrong the longer clip works very well and maybe even be better than the short one in certain circumstances, like clipped to a shirt pocket....but I can't get away from the fact that I really like what I can do with the original small clip....either way short or long clip the Subcom is a great little knife that goes with me everywhere...Doc :D

Do these biscuits really come in G-10 or is it a misprint? I thought they were FRN.

I got a few in this past week after being on backorder for a while. These make great gifts, non knife people love 'em. It's what everyone got for Christmas from me last season, although those were backordered also, so they were distributed a little late. I'd say ~20 have passed through my hands and again, people go nuts for them.

Aloha ALL,
Hey mahalo ront for the head's up! I been trying to get Mike to carry it, glad he finally is. However...
I emailed him regarding which version he has in stock. It just might be an old picture as not too many "factory pics" show the 2nd Gen version. Also, for those who do not know about it:
The "G10 scale" is a typo!!!
Also, I found it interesting that...well, it sold out already! ;) :)

Since it was the first time they were ordered, they only got two in. Needless to say, they sold out the same day they were put on site.
I'd aniticipate a LOT more being ordered next time. ;)

I had bought mine when there were 2 in stock, according to their inventory. Someone else scarfed the other... Sorry dedguy! :o Someone else beat you to the last one! I'm sure that there will be more coming soon!
There's a huge threa about these over at BladeForums, in the Boker Usa section, and there are high remarks and testimonials from some very great folks. Pop by there and give it a read! I'll add my 2 cents once it arrives- I'm hoping to introduce the SF to the Lava someday... :D

Okay, so VWTattoo got one...wonder who got the other? No matter, main thing is VWTattoo likes it and keeps us posted on it. ;)
Also, thanks everyone for your kind words and support... ;)

Aloha Havatoo,
smcfalls13 did a great review of it over at BF. Sadly though, the sheath's are not ready yet. However, the SFB will have a Kydex sheath made by Blade-Tech and it comes with a mini-Tek Lok.
Yes, very easy to carry in back pocket and fills the hand nicely...it is 3/16" thick after all!
God bless and thanks for your interest

I could be wrong, but I check NGK every night just to see what's new, and when I noticed it(before anyone had said anything) there were only two.
It's standard practice to order a small amount of a new item, so you can gauge how well it sells before committing to a larger amount.
I think it's safe to say they'll sell ;)

Heck I got two of the second edition en route. They will join the two first edition already in my keeping. So I'll have not one, not two, not three, but Four! Subcoms and four is today's number. Four. Ah. ah. ah.

Aloha Scotty,
Yeah bro, I know about the "order small first" practice...but...TWO?!! Now, I can see if it were only two of a Kiwi inlayed with...one of Sal or Eric's fillings, then yeah. :p But for the price of the SF...TWO?!! :D
Well, reagrdless, I am happy to know the two got sold right away. ;)

 GREAT GOOGLY-MOOGLY!
I've missed too much in the past week! Every now and then I'd glance a few seconds at the topics in the GD forum to see if there was any news on the Lava's release, but low and behold I get to actually stroll around today and I find that NGK finally has the SUBCOM??? Originally thought of getting one "elsewhere", but I'm glad I procrastinated!!! Well, not glad that I missed out on getting one of the first round... :o
Chad, congratulations! Nothing but good things can come from this, and I'll be watching like a hawk to see when they're back in stock! I assume that these are actually the AUS-8 blades, though, right?
TOM WALKER! PLEASE ORDER ANOTHER 30 OR 40 SUBCOMS!!! I'm sure word has gotten around by now to many NGK regulars, and it's DEFINITELY on my wish list!

Hi Jeff, the first version had the steel advertised, which some like Doc Snubnose prefer, the latest version has Aus-8. Kinda depends on what NGK was delivered...could have been a misprint, could have been real. They sold out too fast for anyone to know. ;)

I think they just had a hard time getting any. I asked them about a month ago if they were going to carry it and they said they had some on order. Might be the distributor shorted them then again maybe they just order a small amount of everything being they dont have a warehouse and they have to find shelf space for everything they carry they do carry ALOT of diffrent brands and almost the whole catalog for many of those brands. I'm sure they have more on order and will be on the site asap.

While 420J2 still holds favor in certain circles is still beyond me, but I know well enough to let sleeping dogs lie, for each have their own reasons... I'll admit, though, that the original steel was the only turnoff for me when I first learned of the SF's existence. Hence the reason I was hoping for the AUS-8 second generation.
I remember when NGK had posted the ZDPD4, they actually used the D4W description. It's clear that they have a lot on their plate over there with website management, let alone running a drugstore, so it's understandable if there's a typo now and then.

Well, since I bought one of the two they had in stock, and I got mine today, I can answer his question. :D It is actually the second generation AUS-8 version. I like it so far, although I haven't had much time with it yet. It feels great in the hand and looks quite cool, too! The lock mech may take a bit of getting used to, as it is a tad tricky to unlock the blade, but I have smaller hands and this isn't that bad at all. I hope to EDC it for a week, then give a nice review for you guys.
Thanks Daywalker!! I dig it so far! It came pretty darn sharp out of the box, but a pass or two with the UF stone got it scary!

Jeff: When I first tested the Subcom F, I was one of the first ones to start screaming that this knife deserves better steel...and I said so in my review for Boker....don't get me wrong I think AUS-8 is a good upgrade for this great knife....I favor the 420J2 not because I think it's a better steel of course....but with continued testing I found that the 420J2 is pretty darn good, it does need to be sharpened more often than the AUS-8 but I don't mind that...Would I run right out and buy all different knives with 420J2...probably not!...However, The reason I believe it works so well with this particular knife is the blade thickness...The 420J2 is holding up real well even as I put the steel to some difficult and hard use....so I find it can do all I want it to do and I'm impressed with the results it has shown me....BTW it is the only knife with 420J2 that has impressed me...That's why I like the original...as well as the fact that I'm the guy who likes the smaller clip...(which of course could be changed to my AUS-8 model SubcomF for sure...) but until the 420J2 gives out and doesn't perform the tasks at hand I'm leaving the clip right where it is....and I don't see that happening anytime in the near future....Doc :D (In retrospect....I'm glad the knife got an upgrade in steel...I'm not sorry for screaming and writing about it.....but it probably wasn't neccessary....My Bad! :o But I think things worked out for the best....Doc :D

Just get the 420J2 V1 :p :D . How many chances are you going to have to use a 420J2 blade that performs way above what it seeminly has no right to do. Then when you get the V2 you can compare.
Like Doc said, he was shopping the need for a better steel... Untill he finally got the better steel, that is. ;)
