Closing a Delica 4 one handed? [Video]

Hey all,

A fellow forum brother sent me an e-mail the other day asking how to close a Delica 4 one handed. So instead of typing out a long response, I made a very short video. He wanted me to post it here and share it with you guys since he was positive others have the same problem.

I didn't have anywhere to host this vid, so I was forced to use Photobucket.com which makes the quality go to crap. Anyways, you get the picture...or is it the video? :confused: :D

Nice video... Looks like you have some fast opening/closing skills (i.e. it looks like I need to work on that :) ).

Why not close it against your leg though ?

Interesting. I put my index finger in the Spyderhole, rather than on the spine, to partially close the blade.

On closing the knife I release the lock with my thumb, push the blade with my index finger 'till about 90 degrees and then close the blade with my thumb ;)

Catamount, same here. I find I am less likely to swing that razor...I mean blade...shut on my finger with my index finger on the hole instead of just pushing the spine of the blade. :rolleyes:

You sure flip that baby around like a pro. I close 'em about the same as you show but I can't flip 'em around like that. :D

That's really cool, I didn't know there were that many ways to close a Delica. I tried a few, but it seems that my thumb is the only digit with enough strength to depress the lock bar :o I usually just let the tang fall onto my index finger and then close the blade the rest of the way with my thumb or leg.

Nice video. I just push down the lock with my thumb and slightly kink my wrist so that the unsharpened part hits my index and just close it from there.

eh you're good Rock! with lockbacks I always use 2 hands or my leg.. :o
only liners or complock I can work with one hand.

you have a lot of dexterity in your hands! If i tried flipping it around like that I'd poke an eye out or lose a toe. I just close it by pressing the lockback with my thumb and pushing it down partway with my finger then closing with thumb. I really like those finger choils (? is that it).

I learned to close my Delicas/Enduras/Natives/Lil' Temp one handed. It must be due to long practice since no one I've let use them has ever been able to due it right. And my right index finger is as big as Arnold's biceps. Truth is it's as much timing and technique as strength. I've never cut myself closing one but I have given up the border switch. Left to right nips me too often in the web between thumb and index finger.

wow, that looks like the hard way to do it....

I hold my knife thumb up in the normal sabre? grip then I just move my thumb back and flick the knife and the no sharpened peice hits my finger and I close it from there.

I'm more concerned about getting it out fast than closing it fast :p

index finger in the path of the kick, thumb to the lock... press and flick, rotate and thumb it closed. Can do that blindfolded, know where my fingers are at all times.

When messing around with one hand openings, I typically do it the same as Capt. Carl said. It seems to just be another way to pass time with my E3.

Nice videos, Rock! I usually go with your second video for my lockback closings, letting the knife hit my finger at the choil area, then close it after repositioning my index finger, or use the 'ol leg for the closing force. Sweet pinky opening, bro! :D

With that dexterity, you should try you hand at piano or guitar. Your fingers look long enough!

My hands/fingers are actually small. They are just like rubber bands. :) I wasn't going to post this, but o well. I have like 25 videos of all different tricks and moves, but I won't bore everyone.

Anyway: I cant do that, way too fast. And it doesnt feel "secure" to me, so I close it against my leg or use 2 hands.

As soon as I get a D4trainer, Ill try stuff like this though, because it sure looks cool.

The way that I close my D4 is by depressing the lock with my thumb and then inserting my index finger into the Spyder hole and closing it with my index finger while moving my other fingers out of the blade's path. This way prevents the need to rotate the knife, thus accelerating the closing.

Rock, that is freaking awesome. You're fast with flipping that thing around. Did you practice or is that just natural? If I did that with no practice I would cut myself real nicely. :)
