View Full Version : How about a Merlin sprint run?

I am really wanting an inexpensive 3" PE hawkbill. The Tasman Salt is an option, but I don't need it to be rust proof, and would prefer VG-10 over H-1. Merlins and PE Harpies (of any variety) go for too much (if you can even find one).

The forthcoming Superhawk is intrigueing, but it is larger, and more expensive, than I'd like. Plus, I'm not a fan of the comp lock.

Since they already have the tooling, it would be fairly easy for :spyder: to do a Merlin sprint run. This would make hawkbill fanatics very happy, and it should sell out very quickly. If they really want to please the fanatics, make the scales purple :D ZDP-189 would be fantastic, but VG-10 is fine.

I'd be in. I've been wanting a hawkbill for some time now, but harpys seem to be scarce in the places I look, and H-1 is also unnecessary. Also I think a mini-hawk would be a great thing too. That would be a sheeple friendly, package opener extrodianare.

after a few weeks of hard use, and a few sharpenings, my PE atlantic salt holds an edge comparable to, if not better than VG-10. and it rusts less too ;) I think you'd be pleased with a tasman. :)

Tasman has a wider blade, larger hole, and jimping on the thumb ramp, use it enough and it's edge holding will increase significantly. All those little things give it the edge over the Merlin.

The Merlin was never made in VG-10 so far as I know, I believe it was only AUS-8 and ATS-55.

:spyder: For a small NKP hawkbill there was the dodo but the public didn't support it and it was disco'd. Sal says no to purple as he's been burned on non-macho colors which don't sell.(think pink ladybug/delica/cricket or blue elica 3)
A frn 3" hawkbill would slow Tasman sales, I don't understand how this would make good business sence.:( :spyder:

I'll probably end up going with a yellow PE Tasman. Even if Sal decided to do a sprint run, it would be a while with all the other stuff they have going on.

A ZDP-189 hawkbill would be pretty cool, though :D Wouldn't it be great if that was the mysterious serrated ZDP knife that Kristi has teased us with?

trust me, if you don't mind scratches on the blade (H-1 scratches easily, like the 420 series steel, but if it is being used like :spyder:s should...;) ) you won't be disappointed with the performance of H-1. the edge retention in the PE increases significantly with use and sharpening. I've yet to really use or sharpen the SE yellow pacific salt I carry, but the black atlantic PE gets used and sharpened almost daily. enjoy the tasman :)!

i wouldn't mind seeing a sprint run Dodo at some point. not NOW exactly as there's so much in the near future and the Dodo just got discontinued. perhaps next year this time or so? also if not purple perhaps a wine color? like a purplish red, as some say "blood red" although imo blood red should be more a brown-red... which come to think of it would be nice too. i just like red handled knives and don't have one of my own yet.

Why not a Mini-Hawkbill the size of the Ladybug or the Jester for carrying on the
key chain ?

IMO, there is no need for a Merlin sprint run, when you got the Tasman in stock as regular. The more people, the more opinions, regarding steel, color, etc. I dont think market calls for a sprint run like that.

On the other hand I would like to see a smaller sub 3 hawkbill.
Jester/Ladybug sized or a small hawkbill blade in a Co-Pilot handle?

I have to agree, just go with the tasman. Everyone on the forum who has one really like theirs.:spyder:

YES!! Send up the Rallying Cry!!

A small hawkbill would be a wonderful thing. And it shouldn't be too hard to design if you (slightly) modify a current handle. Or maybe even something like the spin with a hawk blade would be nice.
Correct me if i'm wrong, but hasn't Spyderco placed different blades in the same handle before? Delica-Harpy, Tasman-Salt 1, Crossbill-Flight-Pelican

If you want a small hawkbill, what about the cricket. :spyder:

Yes, yes, I know. I have, and love, my little FRN Cricket. The only thing is that it's not a "true" hawkbill. I was thinking that a little hawkbill would make a great keychain knife. There isn't much cutting to do with a small blade that wouldn't be made easier with a hawk. I was also thinking that it could be done without basically any handle re-engineering if you used an existing handle. Also, this might turn a few more people on to the great shape of the hawkbill.

But, I suppose, since the cricket is already out and selling so great, maybe a little hawkbill is unecessary at this point.

It'd still be really cool though :)

well i for one feel the Cricket is a little too expensive to be using as a keychain knife. for some reason i just don't feel comfortable having a knife that pricey getting banged around by my keys and hanging off my belt loop all day. same reason i've never gotten an SS Jester i think.

My Merlin is in ATS-55, as Scott said I don't think it was made in VG-10...I love my Merlin and use it daily....but as Jano said there is no need for the run with the Talsman already in production.......Doc:D

I also don't see a need for a run of the merling with the Tasman in production.

I thought that the Merlin was made for a short time in VG-10 as it was listed as such in one of the catalogs.
