Today I received my latest Spyderco acquisition, the large Tim Wegner C48. I wanted something a little smaller and more benign looking than my Military. Plus, nowadays I favor the tip-up carry method over tip-down. My first impression was, WOW, it’s hefty, solid, rugged, thick. My only other larger Spydie, is the Military. Because of the heavier feel to the knife, I was surprised to see that the blade’s edge was every bit as sharp and thin as my Military. I was initially worried about the smaller opening hole, but it seems adequate. Long term use will turn out of it’s a hindrance.

The handle is very solid and secure. It reminds of the locked grip I have on my Native, but gentler. The handle is both secure and gentle to the hand. My main purpose for this knife will be heavy duty cutting chores and MBC. It seems very suitable for that by feel and manipulation alone. I like the looks of the Wegner as well. The Wegner has a very distinctive look. Some of my friends found it odd looking, which is good because none of them felt that it looked like an “assault” knife or anything. Overall, the Wegner seems more solid and stronger than the Military, I carried for a long time. Is this true, in practice as well? Fit and finish are excellent, I cannot even find a fault in the grind lines. Well, I’m off to the cutting board, it’s my turn to cook tonight!

Oil the Wegner with a mineral oil, and food will rinse right off the ATS-34... no rubbing for my Wegner Jr yet...

I love to cook, and my parents only have one problem... I use the Delica(plain) and Wegner jr(40/60) to cook instead of the 5-7" kitchen knives.

I find the wegner's shape to work better than most chef's knives for fine work. just use your fingers on the spine and roll the tip over the herbs.

We all start with 10 fingers. Those with Spydies have 9 to spare, Still need a thumb. Good thing I still have 8 to spare...
