View Full Version : My second knife

Here's my second attempt. The fit and finish were a little better than the first. I used Makora wood for the handle instead of micarta. The wood is much softer. The design of this knife is less attactive to me in it's final form than in my imagination. I wish I had brought the rear edge of the grind up higher. I also wish I had rounded the leading edge of the handle. The flat edge looks crappy to me. My next attempt will be a persian that I designed with bolsters and giraffe bone handles. Thanks for looking!

Very nice. I like the soft lines and mirror finish. What steel did you use? Keep us posted and remember we love pics so and ruff pics will be appreciated to.

What kind of lighting was it under? It looks goldish.
It's a great knife. I like the look of the wood handle.

It's ATS-34. It's not gold, it's just bad lighting :)

I really like the finish on the wood handle.
The rivet hole (And rivets) seems to be really flat with the handle.
And yes "During process" shots would be greatly appreciated...:D

The "rivets" are actually corbys. A corby is a screw with a male end on one side and a female on the other end. After you screw it together, then you grind off the screw head and it leaves the flat surface. You do have to use a step drill to countersink the heads. I'll try to get some during shots on the persian that I'm making next:)

So you don't like your own knife, the good news is that you know exactly why you don't like it and how you will change future attempts to get to where you want to be. Learning at its finest.

I think the mark of a true craftsman is that they are the harshest critic of their own work. To me, it looks great. Love the look of that wood, it has superb figure. The name "Makora" is not familiar to me though, and I can't seem to find anything on it via Google, do you know if it is called anything else?
I'm also curious as to the size of the knife and imagine others might be too, perhaps you could post the blade and overall length. Once again, excellent job.

Deacon,
I bought that peice of wood at Blade and the guy told me it was Makora wood. That's really all I know. I couldn't find it on google either. The peice is definitely a burled peice. It is beautiful wood. The blade is 3 1/4" long and the handle is 4 1/4" long. Overall length is 7 1/2". Thanks for the compliments everyone!

Not bad at all.
Crisp grinds, symmetry looks allright, nice pollish.
I would say, keep on going.
What did you use to finish the wood?
Good luck and a lot of pleasure on making your Persian.
Girafe bone looks awesome, please tell us how you experienced to work with it.

Piet.S,
Thanks for the feedback! I just sanded the wood and applied some Renaissance Wax.
