a friend of mine is going to buy a spyderco knife, i think it was an endura with gin-1 stamped on the blade he asked me about it and did not see any knives still made with that steel i assumed it would be fine but i was curios about its properties, and peoples personal experances.

I have an old (late 80's) Co-Pilot and an early Delica both with Gin-1 and I have had no problems with either. Tell your friend to buy with confidence.

I think its not used much because there's so much stuff out there that either holds an edge longer or is easy to sharpen. Benchmade introduced it again this year on a number of models, but it seems that almost all the Spydercos that used it that are still in production all use the superior ATS-55. GIN 1 ain't bad, it just ain't all that great compared to the newer, better performing stuff, such as S60V (CPM 440V). If he likes the knife that that steel is used on, then go ahead and get it. My experience with customers has been that they (and me, too) prefer the higher performance alloys, even at a slightly higher price.
