How are the Syderholes cut in our blades?

I am guessing they are drilled/machined, but not drilled all the way through in a single pass as this would make a mess of the breakout side; instead, two holes meeting, one from each side.

The basic holes are either stamped or cut out with a lazer. Then they are reamed afterwards.

Is the more expensive lazering is reserved for blades too thick to stamp.

What hapens to the slugs from the holes?
An interesting use for larger slugs might be Lazer cut (just like the opening animation)SpyderBug trinkets/tokens/jewlery: might make good companion piece to the Mini Police Necklace, ear studs, cuff links, keyring (maybe a bit small for that), signet rings, paper embossing dies, and those are just the ones I thought of easily.

I'd love to have a spydie-hole. Kinda like donut holes!

I would love a spydie symbol... I have a good number of small keychains and it would look great on there.

We all start with 10 fingers. Those with Spydies have 9 to spare, Still need a thumb. Good thing I still have 8 to spare...

Hi Knife knut. Joyce is looking into what it would take to collect some "holes" from the lazer cutting.

WOW what an excedllent idea, this is the first time i ventured into the realm of the techno junkie, very cool, i'd love a spyderholethey could make it so it fits into a normal hole like a spyder shaped plug (for display only) and how about spyder buttons or lapel pins, the possibilities are endless, i mean really how cool would a spyderkeyring be... i want one! no infact i want 10!!

I'd love to get my hands on a few of those as well! If I need to make a monetary contribution to the Spydie Hole Foundation, please let me know!

OK guys & gals. We have lotsa "holes". We toss 'em. It would cost more to get the "hole" to you than the "hole" is worth. Soooooo....how do we do this without us blowing a bunch of bread in; time, shipping and handling costs?

Hi Sal,

Thank you for taking the time to address the questions and comments on your forum. It's just one of the many reasons why I hold Spyderco in such high regard.

Back to the topic:

How about including a SpyderHole with the Collector's Club knives?

I'd be willing to pay for Shipping and Handling for any SpyderHoles. I am sure others would too.

Suggestion: Have someone from the forum receive a large bag-o-spydie holes in a single COD(freight) shipment. Then those wanting a few Holes can make arrangements to get them from the Hole Holder. As a spare hobbie task-it would not take that big of a part time effort to send a few packages out in the mail over a couple weeks time. I can see how it would be a bust for Spyderco to throw labor at this task though.

Also, these holes could be :
1) drilled for a ring/clasp/chain grabbit
2) Gold plated
3) engraved

Anyway, I know I'd like a half-dozen to goof with.

Is there a trustworthy volunteer type forumite that would play Spydie-Hole Distributor?

If no one else bites, I'd do it..........

These holes are obviously the same steel as the knives from which they came. Why can't they be sent to the maker of the steel for incorporation into maore knives? No wasted money or materials.

As for getting rid of a few extras, tossing a few into the boxes with Forum knives sounds like a good idea to me.

Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

I'll take a few... Play with the dremel and a shrunken SpydieBug icon... make a pin or 2, keychains, etc...

A few more ideas...
You could make Spydie logo cufflinks and a knife to match, (for a black tie affair) there are several times when I feel like I'm underdressed in a tux with my Spydie (no offense Sal) Also a ball marker for golfing! You could send the cutouts to dealers when shipping orders. Only slight increase in shipping from weight. Vampyrewolf... you'd go through several Dremel bits trying to grind those cut outs, they're harder than Chinese arithmetic! Sword and Shield... I believe the knifes are forged not cast, so melting them down I think is not an option. As far as when the dealers get them... sell them at small cost or have people bring in at least five Spydies for free "holes". (That would prove you're a Spydie junkie!)

"He who dies with the most Spydies wins"

Machine the Spydie logo on 'em and make tie tacks out of them.

We have holes. I appreciate all of the suggestions, but we really don't want to throw any time or money into the holes. (pardon the pun).

If one of you would like to volunteer, we'll send you some holes. Then you can work it out with each other?

That is something simple that I can pull off with out high cost in time/funds.

Sal, what do the holes look like? If you had a digital camera, could you take a pic and post it? I've worked in a few factories and if the holes are in the same condition as the scrap that I've seen, we might not want them once we get them. On the other hand, the might be pretty neat. A picture is worth 1000 words, and if you have the time, w'ed love to see them.

OK PEOPLE, REALITY CHECK.
Get out yer rulers if ya got 'em; also, for the purposes of this post, difficult is synonymous with expensive.

Now, we are talking 14 mm diameter, 4 mm thick disks here, at _the_largest_; we will use this as our example. Machining _on_ something this small is difficult, let alone machining the details; look at the biggest Spyderco logo you can find (I used the one from the animated opening). The legs of the equilateral triangle are 1/10 the the maximum diameter of the bug (which is a pleasing porportion to the eye). Thus the triangular hole on our cutout would be 1.4 mm on a side! (I will not even waste my time trying to figure out the size of the triangular bump in that triangular hole)
For details this size, it might be _cheaper_ to do by laser, than machining!

Ok, If the last Paraghraph leaves you with a glazed look, or you don't have a ruler, keep reading, It is easy from here on out. Two familliar examples of metal cutting that approach these dimensions size are the LadyBug and Police necklace/tie clip. The amount of detail crammed into something this size (rivaling that of the miniature art lockback knives)is what makes the Ladybug so much more expensive than most knives that size. This is part of the reason Titanium is used in the micoPolice; since they are already going to the expense of crafting something that tiny, why not make it out of a more attractive metal?

If I sound snobbish, it is unintentional, as I also originally mispercived the detail involved.

I need further input/permission.

Since I created this monster, I feel some responsibility. Note that I am not accepting the responsibility of Holemaster.

Input needed from SpyderCrew (Sal, Joyce Laituri, Mr. V. etc,)
What are the various sizes of the holes? What level of finish do they have? (could affect demand)

I am somewhat interested in the position, as are others, so I think it we should run a public study of how one would handle the task. This study would include discussion of payment, methods of shipping holes to holemaster, shipping of holes to forumites how widespread the demand for holes is, discovery of enthusiastic volunteers, and other factors that may not be forseen by any single person.

For maximum input on these areas, the primary data source for the study will be threads on the main discussion Forum, created for this purpose

Here are possibilities I have thought of so far.

Fair compensation for time of Holemaster: at least $1 per request, more for specific hole sizes.
Method of Shipping to individual forumites:
For small number of holes, forumite sends Self Addressed Stamped Envelope; do not know for larger.
Payment transfer: PayPal
Most economical Holemaster: Person who lives in Golden area to avoid costs of bulk shipping to Holemaster, passing these savings on to the individual forumites who request holes.

Thank you for your attention/patience.

I e-mailed for the pictures of assorted SpyderHoles. Since viewing the pics, I no longer desire them, as these "holes" are rough and slotted. These are not smooth slugs, albeit very novel spyderco artifacts..
Thanks Christopher...

First, I can't believe that someone could really use those tiny metal scraps. I don't know if it worth even re-melting them. Second, it's the scraps you want, not the holes. You can't take a hole, engrave it, gold plate it aso. It's a hole. It's void for God's sake!

Gave me an idea, since the holes are laser cut... a neat feature for a limited edition knife would be to have the Spydiehole in the blade actually laser cut in the shape of the Spyderco Spider, instead of round! OK, it wouldn't be that practical to use, but it would look cool as all get-out!

The thing that killed this thread originally is when everyone saw what the hole slugs looked like: UGLY
A burnt metal disk with a hole drilled in the middle, with a smaller diameter slot leading to the perimeter of the slug.
Also, the slugs are way too small to do anything with.

But a thread worth saving for some of the other ideas information.

And that you need more suggestions like I need a hole in the head, however what about Will you don't want to but you could clean them up marked the steel type and sell them a little baggies so people can see the different grains and do whatever tweaked out things they would do with different steels. I'd buy a bag. If nothing else it's a cool thread.
