Not that I don't think you guys have any thoughts along these lines - but was hoping that you'd share some. I'm gonna get my first Police - don't expect to use it too hard. Sometimes we like an SE or a PE better in a certain context. In the context of the Police - which way do you lean?

Although I would personally not have a use for one, the PE would be better IMO, if I had to choose. ;) :)

I am a very big fan of the Spydero Police model. I own both a PE and a SE Police, SS. You really cannot go wrong with either one, but I would say from a purely aesthetic point of view, the PE Police is a beautiful piece in it's own class. The slim and sleek lines of the stainless steel construction lend well to the PE.
On the other hand, a fully serrated Police model has been known to be able to saw through metal and other hard materials in emergency situations, where a plain edge would have otherwise failed.
So it comes down to what you're looking for in your Police model. No doubt, the PE Police will cut like a light-saber through any material a knife ought to be used to cut through. However, the SE Police will cut through more things than the PE.
In the end, I'd choose the plain edge. :)

Thanks guys - IIRC you're both from the Baltimore area - I grew up down the road in Rockville - thanks again for your thoughts.

The SS PE Police is my constant companion, I can't easily recall the last time it was more than a few feet from me for longer than an hour or two. I actually went with the SE when I first bought it, but then traded it out for a PE. I'd say it depends on what you mean by not using it too hard. Are you going to use it rarely, but in extenuating circumstances? If that is the case, go with SE... an SE Police is a chainsaw, when I bought mine, I made the same inquiry you did... and the salesman sawed a two or three inch square out of the hood of a wrecked car. I guess you can do that kind of thing when all the sharpening apparatus you could want is within 10 feet of you all day. However, I don't often have to saw holes in the hoods of cars with my pocket knives. If you mean you won't be using the knife very hard to mean that you would be using it fairly often, but only on soft or semi-soft materials (say, nothing harder than corrugated plastic... the PE still cuts like a beast), go with the plain edge. I have a really hard time dulling that edge... there just aren't enough things to cut in the normal course of my day to accomplish that feat... and I look REALLY hard for opportunities to use my pocket knife. I haven't even so much as passed a whetstone over mine for well over a month and it is still sharp enough to shave my arm smooth as a baby's rump.

I'd say no matter what you pick, you are going to love that knife.

I owned both. If I remember correctly, the PE is hollow ground and SE is not?

Police PE + SE from current production are hollow ground; only some the Police with G-10 handles ware flat ground (but there are some Police G-10 with hollow ground too - can't remember the year they are produced) :)

For me I would be a matter of intended use. I strongly prefer a PE but that's due in large measure to the things I do and the things I seldom do with a knife, and that I consider ease of sharpening a major factor in my selection of users. I don't cut on hard surfaces, I rarely cut rope, netting, and loose, fiberous material, and feel no need to increase the "fear factor" my knives produce in others. If any of those are important to you, or you have some other logical reason, then go for SE. That's why a serrated Atlantic rides in my car for emergency seat belt cutting. If you just prefer the looks of SE, rarely do the things it is least advantageous for, and/or are adept at sharpening it, then those are legitimate reasons to go for it as well.

I have Police in PE and don't mind it. Originally, though I was thinking SE. Big reason for me, was that I already have some larger blades in PE. It would be a tough call. Large blades in SE definitely have their place - my Rescue 93mm is a constant companion in my Maxpedition. Doesn't get used that much, but it sure works when it does. One of the things about the Police, though, it that the SE one has it own "look" if you will, over the PE one - almost like two different knives:)

Have you considered a combo-edge?

I'd have to agree.. I'd go with a combo edge. You can always send it back to Spyderco for sharpening if it's too difficult, right?

Thanks guys - bought 'em both - they arrived today. Still can't decide which I like better - but I do like both. CEs don't really interest me for whatever reason - even in such a long blade. Thanks again for your posts.
