View Full Version : Durability of D/E 4 compared to the gen3 models.

Greetings you all:)

I read various stories about the early models of the Delica and Endura being carried and used for as much as 10 to 15 years and still rock solid.

Now I wondered how would the durability of the generation 4 models be compared to the 3?
I mean; will the screws get looser over time, will the knife develop more play with use, will I have to glue the screws eventually so it won't be adjustable anymore?

These questions just came to my mind. I know it's too soon to tell but what do you all predict?

Just curious...;)

Well let me get back to you next week, my time machine is in the shop for its 3000 year tune up...:D

I have to believe the "4" will endure much longer than the 3 or the 2 or the 1's :)

Arend, I think the gen.4 will take much more "workload" as their parents?grandparents. The goal is you can always adjust the screws when needed and its more easy than hammering the pins - there is much more risk that you overhammer it and you can rubbish after that.

I am absolutely in love with my blue ZDP D4 and I cant wait the ZDP E4 to hit the market - that will be another addition..

Depends a lot on the owner.

At the risk of shattering a macho myth, I think probably well less that 50% of all males should be allowed to operate a screwdriver, and of those probaby half should only use one under supervision. Think more D4s will fall victim to lost washers, stripped screws, damaged spring carriers, and other examples of "incompetent servicing" by their owners than will fail in any other way.

The other side of the coin is owner expectations. I think given the same amount of use, the D4 and E4 will stand up better than their 3rd generation counterparts, but I would not expect bank vault lockup from either generation.

I don't think a knife can be built for the price which will last as long as the older gen Delica and Endura...now I am not saying the gen 4 will not last just as long...just that it is a physical impossibility to build something that will last as long. Also, as Paul said, you will have a lot of people disassembling them and screwing them up.

I'm curious about the screw situation too, My BRG SE model has a problem keeping the pivot screw tight. I suppose I could put a little bit of loctite or superglue on the pivot, but I also know I will be taking the little beast apart someday.

I think they are well made and plenty strong.
There are a lot of screwed constructions in this world that we absolutely rely on.
I wouldn't worry about it.
