View Full Version : Is the CE Delica enough serration?

I'm stuck between plain edge and combo edge on the Delica 4 I'm getting...

In your opinions, on the combo, is there enough serration on the short blade of the delica to be useful.... for EDC that is.

Thanks!

First off, let me get this right out of the way....

i'm not a fan of CE at all, so any information i present will be biased against CE....

IMHO, the Delica has too short of a blade for CE, in order for CE to be useful, the knife needs to have at least a 3.5 to 4 inch blade, an Endura, a Millie, Manix, Chinook, etc, those knives *can* be usable with a CE, but i'm still an "all or nothing" kinda guy, go either fully serrated, or full plain edge, CE is a compromise, in trying to be a "jack of all trades" it ends up as a "master of none"

YMMV, member FDIC, some side effects may occur, substansial penalty for early withdrawl, if death occurs, discontinue use of product immediately, offer not valid on any planet with a Oxygen-Nitrogen based atmosphere

Nope - I agree with MacTech - IMO the CE Delica is niether enough PE or enough SE.

I think that if the knife is going to be used for aggresive cutting (cardboard, rope, plastic), the combo edge will do better than the PE in virtue of the serrations at the heel of the blade. The serrations can start the cut and then the PE section can finish it without getting caught up in the material.
I think that even two or three serrations improve cutting performance. The points require much less force to start a cut.
So, in my opinion, a fully serrated blade is best, a combo-edge is better than a PE.

For rough field work that involves cutting substances that are difficult to "bite" into such as fire hose, a combi-edge...even the Delica sized is ideal.

i got a ss CE delica. I find it to be a useful knife for gardening work etc. Got it for 25 bucks off the bay so I have to say im very impressed with my purchase. If i got a new delica though, id get a PE (which i have on my zdp del =))

also not a fan of CE... most people get them thinking they're the best of both worlds, then end up getting, well, both worlds -- a PE knife and a SE knife!

If you are to get a CE knife get the Endura4. Just enough of both worlds.
I bought a Delica4 CE by mistake online and well it ended up in my toolbox...

Hi Shifty, welcome to the Spyderco Forum and enjoy your stay here.
I used to carry two Delicas with me, one in PE, other in SE. The reason was also that I'm no longer a big fan of CE. Used to be, but not anymore.
This doesn't imply in any sense that you can't get your job done with a CE Delica. I mean, hey, my first Spyderco was a CE Ladybug and I still found a lot of use with the little one.

I would tend agree with MacTech as well. One of my D4's is a CE one. I carried it pretty well exclusively for a few weeks just to see if I could use it as an EDC blade. Usually, my CE's are relegated to yardwork. It's not that they can't be used, but if you do have to a bit of serious cutting, they are quite inconvenient. I have found, though, that in something like yardwork, there are times when the CE is a great way to go:) Most of my stuff - a PE gets the job done, a full SE for harder stuff. Now, in saying that, the CE D4 does work better than other brands with CE as well:D In 3 inch blades, my opinion is also that there isn't enough of each. As the saying goes "It depends":) One of my friends has a CE in a Mini-Grip and thinks it's the greatest thing since sliced bread:)

One thing i've wondered, do small CE knives appeal more to the "Newbie-Knut" and plain old knife users in general, it seems that a good percentage of Knuts tend to look down upon and malign the CE (myself included), but there has to be some reason for it's popularity....

it may be the notion of "percieved versatility", a knife user thinking he's really getting "two knives in one" only to find out once he puts it to actual use that one side of the blade (typically the PE portion) sees the most use while the other portion remains largely unused, until the PE section dulls off

a more logical solution, carry one of each, a SE and a PE, not only do you get enough of your preferred edge type to be usable, you also have a *backup* blade, and backups are *always* a good thing to have....

it's gotta be the Newbies and "normal" knife users behind the popularity of CE blades, that seems to be the most logical explanation

I think it has more to do with personal preference, and how you intend to use the knife, than how "knuts" you might be....

One of my Delicas is partially serrated, IME there is enough serration to be useful. However, I have never warmed to SE and would rather carry multiple PE or a PE / CE combo. Go figure.

One of the local retailers I deal with mentioned that CE's sold the most, followed by PE's and then SE's. When I bought my Police, I was actually looking for an SE one, but they mentioned that they only brought them in by special order:eek: I would tend to agree that a new user would think that a CE gets the best of both worlds in a single blade - one thing I've noticed locally, is CE's tend to be very common.

I've found that non knife knuts do not usually carry more than one knife, so unless they are carrying a dyad, they only have one choice if they want both edges.

CE does seem logical to me, there's the plain edge for finer and more controlled work near the tip, and there's the serrations near the handle where you can use more leverage and a more rugged edge is desirable.

It's popular and it makes sense, but I still don't like it.

I love combo Spyderco knives only. Spyderco's serrations are much more aggressive than others and they cut like a longer blade than they actually are. I had a SS CE D4 and I loved it. My buddy not loves it. Unless you are doing heavy cutting requiring a large blade, the Spyderco CE Delica fits the bill. If you need a larger blade, the Endura is the next up.
