Ok, got my dual boot with winblows xp pro & Ubuntu 6.1 going now... so which progs do you guys recommend I pop in here as far as antivirus, firewall and spyware progs?

Picked up an issue of linux pro mag, deals with the ntfs vs linux issue, so I'm going to try and figure out that part myself. Been poking around here and pulled a few more toys, but haven't gotten to the ntfs issue right now. Figured a dual boot with a 30/10 split would be sufficent until I get it figured out, or get my 320 split up for more storage with my progs & games.

You do not need antivirus and anti spyware apps for Linux. There are hardly any virusses for Linux and spyware doesn't work on Linux eigther. That is one of the great things about Linux: Superior security! You do not need to mess with firewall configuration on a standard Ubuntu install. But if you do want to work with it install Firestarter (sudo aptitude install firestarter). For your NTFS problem try the Ubuntu forums or Google: fuse ntfs.

To realy get the best of your new os I recommend getting a book on Ubuntu linux. It should help you understand the power and workings of Linux better.

Linux is a good choice!

Big section in this mag deals with the ntfs system, like 7-8 pages of it. Most likely stopping back at the bookstore today to hunt for more. Lot easier for me to flip through a book than try to find what I want on webpages (if my bookshelf is any clue to that :D )

Firewall: Firestarter (http://www.fs-security.com/)

Antivirus: ClamAV (http://www.clamav.net/) or F-Prot (http://www.f-prot.com/)

Rootkits: rkhunter and chkrootkit

NTFS: NTFS-3G (http://www.ntfs-3g.org/)

Since you are running Ubuntu, I would definitely check out the Ubuntu Forums (http://ubuntuforums.org/). I am a member there and it is a great place for help with Ubuntu.
