I just got back from the NY Cusom Knife Show.
I had a great time looking at some incredible knives and meeting some of the craftsmen.
Spyderco was well represnted, with Sal leading the way. In addition to the updated line, there were a bunch of prototypes.
I ended up buying the Temperance, the Meerkat and a Sakai titanium job.
The Temperance is a heavy duty mid-sized knife made with an MBC quality compression lock. This is the best implementation a compression lock I've seen. Even with its modest size, this workhorse tool has limited tactical capability.
The Meerkat is a small knife with the really cool "phantom" lock.
While I already own a Sakai "gentleman's knife", I couldn't resist this titanium job.
While there many terrific prototypes, three caught my attention, the Impala, the Ulu and the One Hand knife.
The Impala is a large folder designed by a South African. While I prefered the smooth blade, it also comes in a gut hook design.
The Ulu is the ultimate box cutter, and I want one.
The One Hand knife is an inovative design meant for someone with only one hand. There is a rocker blade off the end of the handle.
The user can put a great deal of the weight, on the item being cut, and still maintain good control. For someone in those handicapped circumstances, this will be a
blessing.
Bram Frank was also there while I was there and I also got a chance to talk to Bob Terzuola.
Lastly, Sal delivered, free of charge, a substantial number of engraved recue knives to New York's Finest - Black for the Police and Orange for the Firemen.
All in all, if you get a chance to go to one of the bigger shows, bring only what you can afford to spend.
One way or the other, you pay for your tools!
