OK Manix Guy 2 ordered a small knife a black FRN Calypso Jr. I am a little nervous with this order form NGK . I have read of warpage and blade wobble , but this knife has a certain appeal to me when I have to go small , and the small side of my collection is very weak . The Ambii clip , and steel of course helped my choice . Hope I did not blow it .

I ordered one, too, needing a Spyderco for average everyday fruit-cutting, box-opening kinda stuff that the Ronin and Yojimbo aren't really meant for. Mostly I'm very interested in the ZDP steel and flat-ground blade; I'm not so keen on the handle material. The odd reports of quality issues don't concern me: if there's a problem, I'll send it to the good folks at Spyderco and they'll make right, right?

Hopefully your purchase will pan out well, it most likely will. I have an older gray Calypso Jr. and there many things I like about the knife. I like the ergonomics, the clip and how it carries, and it is a great little cutter.

I think you'll be pleased with the knife. Mine is pretty solid, and the blade does not appear to be warped. The only thing I'd prefer to change about it would be the addition of a 4-way clip, but overall it's a great knife. Oh, and mine came ridiculously sharp. :D

I really want that black Caly too but the warped blade on my burgundy Caly has me a little gun shy. My two gray Calys were perfect though so I will order the black one soon unless I hear more horror stories.

I have several Caly Jr's with no blade wobble, a real fine knife.

I have ordered from them before. If you ask them, they will check the knife out to make sure the one they send you is satisfactory. Great customer service from NGK.

Contact NGK and ask them to pick me out a good one?
What about the people who don't ask?

I'll take what I'm given and sort it out with Spyderco's customer service if it's defective. Why should somebody else be sent a knife of lower quality that was destined for me?

True, but I would imagine that if NGK finds that they have a knife that is substandard or not up to specifications, they would send it back to Spyderco or whoever they order from. From the excellent customer service I have received there and have heard from other people, I can't imagine that they would intentionally send out a poor quality knife.

To many people (remember, hundreds of these have been sold), the issues that have been occurring with these knives are unimportant. A slightly off-center or warped blade, or a blade that wobbles a bit when closed does not affect the actual functionality of the knife as a cutting tool. Therefore, a lot of people would be perfectly content with any of them, even if they're less-than-perfect from the perspective of an enthusiast. Personally though, such flaws would bother me, and I don't consider asking to have your knife inspected before shipment to be discourteous or unfair to other people at all.

By the way, what does it mean when a blade is warped?

Thanks for comments . Redhawk I did ask for a check before sending my order , just to be sure . Mr. Andrews , I work in Quality Control for the biggest heavy equipment company in the world , if a product is defective that part is put on hold until resolved before any part is sold . Passing along a poorly made product is not acceptable the customer is our top priority . I feel Spyderco has the same respect for all of us , if a knife is not right it is a dealers responsibility to check before sending to anyone as far as I am concerned . If I am ever sent a clunker ( I never have from Spyderco ) that dealer would never get my business again . Thanks everyone for your comments .

I work in QC for the largest appliance manufacturer. Our vendors never open the box until it is installed in the home. It would not be cost effective for them to open and examine each and every product. I cannot blame NGK for not examining every knife in their inventory. They will do so if asked when you order. That is more than most of the online dealers will do.

By the way, what does it mean when a blade is warped?

Just as it sounds. The Calypsos that exhibit warped blades have a curvature from the pivot area to the tip.

Hey Manix Guy, I assume youre talking about Caterpillar, what plant do you work for? I recently visited the Aurora (WLED) plant to interview for a welding engineering internship, my friend ended up getting the offer , but the tour was very impressive you guys do some awesome things.

Hello Mark , yes I do . In the parts facility in Morton . I have been to the plant mentioned by you years ago . Send me a PM if you want more info . Redhawk , you are right about cost effectiveness from your stand point , but where I work parts are inspected before and after they come in from a vendor , you are looking at a finished product , where I work ( every part ) everything is considered to be a finished product . We do handle failures everyday where I work that is our job .

My new black Caly jr arrived today. I REALLY like it. There is some blade play when it is closed but it locks up like a vault with no vertical or horizontal play when it is open. It opens very easily, almost flickable already. It came Spyder sharp. It will see a serious amount of carry time.
