Hello!
I purchased a Delica 4 Wave at a Gun & Knife show a few months ago, and I am VERY pleased with my first Spyderco. I have thought for a long time now, and I want another one, and a Gun and Knife show is coming around in a month.

So heres my dilemma... too many :spyder: 's to choose from! I saw 2 at that show that really caught my attention.
The Dodo SE
The Lava
Now this is my second topic for choosing knives, so I hope these questions are a little better :)

1. What are the pros/cons of a ball bearing lock? what is it's purpose?
2. The blades are very different. Which cuts what better?
3. What knife do you prefer?
4. If it's the Dodo, SE or PE?
I CANNOT get both knives :(

Thanks,
Fusion

Dodo!

The BB lock can be easier to close than a lockback, however, the earlier Dodos did have problems with the lock. This was fixed in the later ones, IIRC.

Can't really comment on the blade shapes, except to say that the Dodo works extremely well on cardboard.

Don't have either, but for what it's worth, the Dodo has been discontinued, so if you want, you can always get a Lava later, but the reverse may not apply.

Personally, I'd recommend an SE Dodo.

Only pros :D It's the smoothest lock ever made! Very secure. I have a poliwog with BB lock and love it. Not a big fan of the lockbacks, but :spyder: makes so many and everything else about them is great ...

what is it's purpose?

Ummm ... to lock the blade in place ... ;) Seriously, what do you mean?

I meant, why would you want this over the standard lock? Why did they make a different one.

Thanks for the replies, keep em coming!

I love my dodo, perhaps even more than my lava. They both are comfy, they both are great cutters, but the SE reverse S blade on my dodo works better for the jobs I need a knife for. The only complaint I have about the lava is the blade steel, VG-10 just doesn't take a "biting" edge that I like (that and my salsa still beats it for overall slicing ability, it does take a biting edge).

As for the ball lock, it is an amazing device. Unless you have a defective model, it will take up all the slack in the blade when open (absolutely no play), and will be rock solid under any pressure. The traditional lockback (lava included) will eventually get a tiny bit of vertical play.

A unique blade shape made from great steel, G-10 handles and a very innovative lock all made in Golden? It shouldn't be that tough of a question :p. The hard question is SE or PE (I vote SE)? The dodo is my vote. When you save up some more money, then you can lava the lava ;)

they are both great knives -- i have both. the dodo is an amazing innovation in knives -- from the ball-bearing lock (one of the most solid lock-ups ever) to the ergonomic handle. i have the SE, and i like that version better on the dodo because it requires less sharpening, which can be difficult due to the blade shape.

but the lava is also amazing. you really have to hold one to "get it." the negative angle means you don't have to turn your wrist down to get to a comfortable cutting position, which means you can cut longer with less hand fatigue.

can't lose either way, but you may want to grab the dodo (if the price is reasonable) as its no longer being made.:(

At first the Dodo didn't appeal that much to me but I know it would make a great utility knife. When I saw one on eBay for $50 BuyItNow, I snagged it immediately. Turns out I really like this knife a lot. When I need a good utility knife, this is the one I grab. I use this baby quite a bit and really happy I got one.
