View Full Version : how about another spyderco necklace?

The mini-police has been discontinued for years, I I still think it's a must have jewellery for all knifenuts. How about bring on another mini-spydie necklace? Maybe a mini-poliwog or mini-cricket? with some more rust-free material such as talonite? That will be way too cool!

I'd go for a mini-Cricket! That would look cool.

Agreed 100%. We need a new necklace. Yes, I guess the Polywog would look cool as a necklace, but I'm not sure about a ball lock that small... OTOH, a mini Cricket... :)

Mini Cricket sounds great. I would love to have one. The lock would need to improve though. Otherwise, accident can happen easily.

I would buy any model the Great Spyder Factory chose to make but I guess I'd be partial to a Blue Lum. :)

I would love to see new run of completely rustproof (H1) Police necklaces. Or SS Endura ones. Cricket would be probably too small to be really useful at all. Maybe Spin with a bit redesigned handle?

or, a slipjoint like ukpk or kiwi. Indeed, at this size, lock doesn't make too much sense.

Another vote for H1 here... Maybe a mini-Para military model?

IIRC, the locks to date have been slipjoints, rather than proper locks? I think it should also look good if you're just wearing it as a necklace as well, hence my call for a Cricket. Since it'll be that small, maybe something like the SFSW Yin and Yang Cricket?

I would love to see a Cricket necklace but I don't think it will ever happen.
IIRC Spyderco stopped making the Police necklace because they did not want any chance of one of there knives getting on an airline.

There's lots of Spydies I'd love to see done as necklaces: Native, Harpy, Delica, Lava, etc. Any number of classics can be done as necklaces and we can talk about it until we're blue in the face. ;)
Personally, I'm all for having a new :spyder: designed specifically as a necklace. Maybe it won't be one-handed or have an MBC rated lock, but something smaller than a Jester/Ladybug3 that can be worn on a dog tag chain or other small chain, but with big cutting power, great ergos (for one finger or so), and either be deceptively decorative or extremely low profile as to not draw any unwanted attention...

"EXCUSE me! Are you looking at my breasts? "
"No, I'm admiring that deceptively decorated knife between them."
[/Family Guy style random clip]
...besides, my flash drive gets lonely and pulls the hairs out of my chest just to get attention.
So, :spyder: necklace designed from the ground up. I'll start sketches.

I'd like to see another run of the mini-police. But in Ti/H1 this time. (Maybe with a slightly beefier lock too).
That's be another one to add to the list...

This augurer says that it'd look good!
As for designed knives, well, we never did get a run of Sal's pendant, did we? I'm not sure precisely what was patented &c, but:
http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/7418/pendantknifev100oc3.jpg
Five minute's work, which explains why it's so basic.
I don't know precisely how we would get this to work, but since we aren't going for MBC rating, all we really need is reliability. How reliable was the pivot on the Gerber Chameleon (http://www.gerber-tools.com/Gerber-Chameleon-6425.htm)?
If there's interest, I'll do more work on the handle (ergos... it has ergos?).
Edit: I have no clue as to how a reliable lock would even be possible, given the limitations. The furthest I've gotten is a liner/frame lock on the thin handle, but that would be very flimsy. Any ideas?

Err... I've just realised, the above pendant/knife is 9 cm long. Back to the drawing board:o
Edit: On second thoughts, is the size fine?

Ok, I'm getting the size down, but I think I've hit the minimum limit (8 cm long, 3.4 wide).

To anyone who has the Police necklace, what's the approx pivot size, and the distance the pivot is from the edge of the handle?

Get rid of the bottom 2 holes and down size it to 25mm long and that could be the Value totum knife.

A tiny hawkbill blade might be more useful at cutting things such as small strings and fibers due to the hawkbill blade holding the object being cut on the blade.
I THINK WE ARE ON TO SOMETHING HERE!

I think that if the serrations were the same size as they were on the mini police, it should work alright. Although, it might be best to go with a plain edge.
A hawkbill blade on a knife this size would be huge advantage for sure either way.

One small question, if this goes ahead, will it be a slipjoint like all the others, or would a lock be possible? Then again, I'm not entirely sure what kind of lock we'd be able to use.

Will - After reading why Sal created the Totem, I don't think it was intended to be a knife. This thread discusses it, very unique and interesting piece.

I currently using a Swisstech Utilikey. It is simply look like a key and it can unfold to be a CE Blade. I think we can took this design and make modification to be a real necklace knife.
See the picture for more detail.
1. We can make the Blade and handle bigger to the same width of the necklace.
2. We can make the handle more comfortable and groove for fingers.
What do you guys think?

Oh yes, very yes. But...
I don't think you could make a flippable tiny bali without having some serious blade play, there'd be absolutely no weight in the handles.
I was also thinking a Salt would be fun, a mini yellow FRN handle :D
Actually, you could just put a H1 blade in a ladybug with a yellow FRN handle, and it would be too freaking cool.

How about taking a trip back down the Cricket necklace path. Imagine a Cricket, maybe the size of a quarter or a bit larger, but perfectly round when closed. The cutout on the non-clip side being made on both sides to make a nice place for traction in a one-finger grip, slip joint lock, and this allows for the blade to be wharncliffe, hawkbill, reverse-s, or semi-leaf style. This opens up a few doors, eh?

That's sound interesting. I think for Cricket, once opened, we might be able to get a small choil there. And that would make it a 2 fingers knife. And I think with the slipjoint, it is still safe enough. Just think of the UK Penknife.

If it is a necklace, it should be interesting to look at.
A lot of necklace jewelry is in the "tear-drop" form. Hmmm what Spyderco looks like a Tear drop?
The TOAD! :D

Zen, you might be onto something there. A mini toad would be a crazy awesome thing to wear around your neck. Heck, I'd wear it, and I don't even like jewelery.
What other spydies look good closed? I nominate the native 1 and 2, and the lava. The lava has a great leaf shape when closed.
I'd still be super psyched about a micro harpy, man that would be cool. :D
cobrajoe
02-26-2007, 10:00 AM
Also, I vote that it has a lock of some sorts, if you have a hawkbill or reverse S shape, it would want to close on your fingers when you poke something with the tip.
ruxton
02-26-2007, 03:21 PM
Hmm I can't see the native or lava working very well, purely because of the choils. Part of the reason the mini-police works so well is that it's still got great ergo's, IMO it would be preferable for it to have good ergonomics rather than to look good and have the novelty value. I wouldn't mind if it was an entirely new design rather than a miniaturized version of an existing model, as long as the locks sturdy and it fits the hand (or fingers :P) well.

I've been working on some sketches between studying for finals, and now that finals are over it might be time to resurrect this thread.
At the moment, he ergos are designed for 3 different thumb and forefinger grip positions; the blade shape is as of yet undetermined (but likely wharnie); the lock will probably be a slipjoint, and at the moment it's designed to fold almost into a perfect circle when closed. Although everything else about it is ugly as **** right now, it's made for function. Working on a "release from the chain" system right now so it can actually be used...
But the real question: Is there any interest in an entirely new necklace knife right now?

Curious, I've pretty much completed a design as well. I won't show it at the moment, but to give you a hint, recurve, a lock like the one on the Spyderco Q, perfectly symmetrical (that was a pain!), flat area for engraving, etching or inlays. Oh, and tip-down carry using break-away chain or paracord. And I've gotten comments that it looks good, which is a first for my designs:o
I don't think that gives away too much.
