I was at Wallyworld today and decided to pick up a Native II in S30V with PE blade. I already have the Native III in VG10 PE and that knife is actually the one that got me in trouble by buying 9 more Spydies. I went through 5 knives at the sporting goods department and every one of them had excessive horizontal blade play. I picked the one with the least blade play. My Native III is tight with no blade play at all. I just obtained a SS handled PE model and it too has no blade play. Is Wallyworld getting some "lesser" quality versions of the Native? I read on another knifesite about placing a razor blade between the blade and FRN handle and giving the pin a good tap with a hammer. I did and it took two hits with the hammer to tighten it up. I sure wish Sal would make this knife with screws. I have many other knives but I still come back to my Native.

I'm certain Wallyworld gets the same Native as everyone else.

A main reason Sal has this site is for customer feedback to alert him to any potential issues. I'm sure they will do a double check of the QC on it. ;)

WTF?

Is there a PE Stainless Steel Native??? Where can I get one. I can't seem to find one as I think that would be my ideal Native.

I love the Native III in PE, but a S/S Native would be my ideal carry for 'heavy pants' (ie: jeans) with shorts I like to carry my Native III PE as it weighs next to nothing and I'll let me mobile phone and keys do the unenvieable job of pulling my pants down in a public place :P

Alway keep in mind the Wal Mart return policy. And remember that just because someone returned it doesn't mean it gets sent back to the manufacturer. Sometimes I think everything sold at Wal Mart should come in a heat sealed clampak so you would be certain it hadn't been returned by someone else.

On the other hand, I have bought 3 Natives from our local Wal Mart, and have no complaints with any of them, so maybe they send all the good ones to Kansas :D

How does Spyderco have the ability to supply the volume that W-M requires??? I was under the impression that Golden did not have a high volume manufacturing facility like Seki City? Are they subcontracting? Perhaps these like the Gen 1 BRK ones by Camillus, but with new blade steel?

The contract with Wal Mart was based on Golden, CO. production so they could be sure to meet the Wal Mart demand (according to previous posts here). No sub-contractors or intercontinental shipping to cause problems. I'm kind of curious to know what percentage of the total production capacity in Golden is tied up by the Wal Mart contract, but I doubt I'll ever find out.

I've bought about two of the Native3's and one of the Native S30v Golden versions (not from wallyworld)......both my Native3's felt (subjectively) 30% more "solid" and tighter in the lockup than the S30v version....IMHO the 3's have better fit tolerances....

C 41 Native = S 30 V, made in Golden

C 41 Native II = AUS-10 , made in Seki

C 78 Native III = VG-10, made in Seki

C 41 Native = S 30 V, made in Golden

C 41 Native II = AUS-10 , made in Seki

C 78 Native III = VG-10, made in SekiWell, technically

C41 FRN Native = 440A ("BRK 1st Generation") made in USA but not in Golden, GIN-1, 440V, and S30V all made in Golden

C41 SS Native II = AUS-10 and now VG-10 PE was disco'd a few years back, so those are all AUS-10 both made in Seki

C78 Native III = VG-10, made in Seki

As has been said, PE Native IIs were made, but discontinued a few years ago. They do show up for sale once in a blue moon on eBay, and perhaps a bit less frequently on the BladeForums Exchange forum.

bugger ! I'd love a PE S/S Native :(

Will have to trawl the Bay more frequently to see if these pop up. Would love to add it to my family of Natives

You have to be vigilent and check the various sites often. I had been looking for a SS handled PE for about 4 months and late one night I happened on a site that I had not been to before and "Oila"! They had one for sale. I actually called the next day to make sure it was a PE and that they actually had one in hand. It was and they did and I bought. I'm now the proud owner of it. The black blade PE is kind of hard to come by but I have found a place to purchase one although I'm on the "list" for the next shipment.

I had a similar experience, except that there were only 2-3 Natives to select from, and all had various QC issues. That was also my first exposure to Spyderco, and it left me rather wary. I eventually decided to give the company another try because I found the Salt 1 very appealing, and I'm glad I did. I do find it curious though that reports of such QC issues are relatively frequent regarding the Wal-Mart Native.

Found a Walmart that had them. They had 2, 1 had pretty bad blade play, 2nd one was solid with centered blade and no play, bought it.
I think it's more of pinned construction thing than anything with the inconsistency of QC.

If some knives are coming through with solid lock-up, and others have lots of blade play (and other fit and finish issues), would that not indicate inconsistent QC?

Speaking of Wal-Mart, have any of you picked up the Gerber EAB box cutter? I believe it is a Wal-Mart exclusive as far as bricks and mortar retailers.

If you haven't seen it, it's ten bucks, and may be the coolest box cutter ever. I've given it to family members and everyone loves it. It may be in short supply at the stores though.
