Does it make for easy sharpening or a nightmare due to the hardness of this steel?

I use a Sharpmaker (fine and U/F rods) and the 30 degree setting to touch up my ZDP D4. I used an Edge Pro to reprofile the blade when I got it. The back bevel is about 12 degrees. Now I can use the Sharpmaker to do any light sharpening or touching up and it comes back pretty quickly. Of course, I touch my EDCs up once a week or so, so they never get "dull".

I have found ZDP to be one of the easier steels to sharpen. My Caly JR in ZDP cleans up super on the Sharpmaker. Just use the 30 degree setting on the Caly.

My experience is that the first sharpening session can be a bit of a nightmare. Setting the right angle to match the sharpmaker's and getting the edge just the way I like it. It's easy to get a functional edge, heck just use the 40 degree angle. But getting the edge to the sharpness that I'm used to was tough the first time. The second and subsequent sharpening sessions are as easy as any steel.

Just like Mister Blonde, The first 3-4 sharpening rituals are hard, but once you get to the real core of the steel, it's really easy and stay sharp for ... well for ever....

Just like if the ZDP was meant for the 204.

I am saying this after using the original ZDP purple D4 as my main edc for a couple of months...
