who else has found their holy grail so unexpectedly... and inexpensively? anyone got a great grail-hunt story to share?
here's one...
now, i've been searching for a PE big calypso that wouldn't break the bank ever since i got into spydies... closest i got was a SE i ended up selling... almost got another one a couple days ago, but missed my chance. fellyjr knows i've been kicking myself about that... (thanks for the sympathy, brother!)
but, seems my ebay-stalking has finally paid off... just landed a PE big caly, newly listed, for $100 BIN!!!!
couldn't be happier, although this purchase meant maxing out this month's entertainment budget... which means i won't be buying anything when i go to new graham tomorrow -- just having a look around. this week alone, i landed a cheap SE dodo, a WAY cheap burgundy goddard, and now the PE calypso!!! gotta go into spyder-shopping rehab for a bit!!!!!!!!!!

Awesome score I didn't pull the trigger simply because of the pics and mention of scratches. Let us know how it turns out with some pics! It's funny I was just talking about your score on another post:D

well, a scratch from getting it out of the box, or whatever the seller said it was from, is enough to make me not feel guilty about playing with it and carrying it on very special occassions... :D good thing my paycheck came today, along with some other money the government owed me... :D

Congrats on getting our grail, that PE Big Caly is going to be a mean cutting machine (unless you plan on putting it away, then it'll just be a pretty mean cutting machine.)
Good find Clovisc,
only 1200 made, PE & SE, some 10 years ago. I designed that model for me to carry. At the time, I wanted a long blade, a la Police, but thin, with a finger choil for urban carry. The Calypso jr was a tad short for my EDC.
Apparently most did not have the same tastes, as the larger model did not find a large market.
Funny how time, laws and social pressure shrinks blades. Now, in town, I carry a Stretch 2 (3.5" blade). At home in the woods, I still like 4" blade, but carry a Millie.
Maybe that's why the "Chokwe" folder has a 4" blade ;)

the spyderco calypso PE is special to me, because its the first knife i saw that got me interested in spyderco. i liked the class, the ergos, and found it aesthetically captivating. i remember saying something shortly after seeing it along the lines of "wow -- i want one of them!!!" the guy who owned it and showed it to me kinda went heh, good luck.
never realized so few were made.
a 3" blade is sized right for not freaking out people too badly, but too short for cutting up potatos (my "staple food"). i've always found myself wanting about 4" or so folder around my house, kitchen, or outdoors.
i think a 4" chokwe folder will be sized just right... :D

Now he needs a JD Smith ;) They seem to be going relatively cheap on ebay these days.
Congratulations on your new PE Calipso, great catch. Enjoy. :D

This Chokwe folder, is this by any chance going to be made in flat ground ZDP ? :D

kwakster, right now it's sounding like the chokwe folder is going to be H1, which can only be hollow ground... a far more practical choice for dealing with the 7 month rainy season in the part of africa where chokwes live. (they don't clean rust off of their knives...) :D
