I recently got both models of the "S" they are awesome...The design, fit, and function is flawless, the compression lock is a nice touch...I don't think I'll use them, they are just too nice for that...Sal and Spyderco Crew.... kudos for a job well done....Everyone who has handled and seen them is just amazed at the quality and beauty....These two are real eye candy for the collector...I can't decide which one I like better....Doc:D

They sure do make a handsome pair, don't they Doc? Congrats and enjoy. :)
When I first got mine I couldn't decide which one I liked better, and I still can't! :D

Nice addition to your collection Doc. Fit and finish on the "S" is excellent, design is very ergonomic and quite nice looking as well. I only wish they'd make a solid bladed version, preferably with a solid handle as well. Blade cutouts look "cool" but can cause drag and tearing in some materials. They are also a nuisance to clean, and therefor a potential health hazard, if the knife is used for food prep or processing game. Handle cutouts observe Murphy's Law, by allowing more lint and other garbage to get inside the knife than they allow to get out. They may even create a "cheese grater" effect - cleaning "pills" of lint off the insides of your pockets and collecting them inside the knife.

It would be one bad "S" knife:D

Doc,
Congratulations on getting such a nice looking couple! Eye candy indeed!
For some reason I did not have much trouble picking up a favorite. It is a silver one for me!

Congrats on the new knives. My grey S is something of a 'house knife', it lies within reach on my kitchen counter for when a I don't have a knife on me (gasp! ). It works pretty well. The MIM process leaves pretty smooth edges on the cutouts so drag is minimal. Cutting through cardboard seems a little easier actually, than a solid blade. It's when the edge dulls a bit and the cut becomes rougher, that's when you see stuff clogging up the cutouts. Cleaining the cutouts (especially food) is something of a pain though. I rinse, brush and dry with a towel; I'm sure this leaves some water in the cutouts, but so far no rust has appeared yet.

Anybody else want one with no "cut-outs" inthe blade or handle?

I actually thought I was the only one. ;)
I think the knife is a great design, but I'm partial to more a "traditional" solid look. Perhaps the cut-out on the scales could be replaced with a laser-engraved pattern similar to that on the Spin? Even totally plain would be neat.

An S with a solid blade would indeed be welcome. Makes it a better EDC knife.

I have never been partial to the cut out blade/scales. I don't one a knife like that, but a solid one would probably seek me out at some point.

sal Count me in Sal! I would definitely be interested in an "S" that has no cutouts in the blade/handle. I love the blade shape and the overall size of the knife but the cutouts are a deal breaker for me. Without cutouts, the S would make a great, more versatile, EDC. It would fill a gap between the Salsa and Lil Temp models.
I know that this may open a can of worms, but may I suggest having a solid "S" as the :spyder: 2007 forum knife! It would be inexpensive to purchase, it would be easy for Spyderco to produce (simply eliminate the webcuts in its production), and it would create a nice variation of an existing model. IMO, these are all important aspects in the selection of a forum knife.

If not a forum knife, perhaps a Sprint of some sort? Maybe even a unique colour/shade/finish for the scales?

Sal,
Thanks for asking! The only reason I have yet to buy an "S" is because I presumed a solid handle/blade version was on the way. I would definitely pick one up. While I do agree the "S" is very spiffy as is, I would prefer a solid handle and blade. Black aluminum, or maybe a nice dark maroon/burgundy would be great, too!

Hi PSU,
The "S" blade is Metal Injection Molded (expensive tooling) and the handle is stamped. Making a solid "S" (MoreS  ) would require all new tooling. Just as if it was a new model. For this reason, careful consideration is required.
appreciae all of the comments.

i enjoy my "S" but a solid blade.....like an "S2".....would also be sweet.....Like wouter said, I was pleasantly surprised that the "S" sails through cardboard with ease and no snags........Congrats Doc Snubnose....:)
I kinda like the holes in the handle....makes drying the knife after I hose it down really quick...
Thanks for clarifying that Sal. I thought that the conversion would be a simple. I didn't realize that it would require all new tooling. I guess I can scratch that forum knife idea. A solid S would still be a great knife.

after last week's spydie-acquisition bonanza, and getting to see the S in person at new graham, the knife now holds a top spot on my "to get" list.
the injection-molded-bladed S certainly appeals to me, no matter how impractical it may or may not be.
although, impressed as i am with my new R2, i've gotta say... a solid-bladed S would be one sweet EDC knife! and i'm a sucker for a "different" colored scales...

I didn't realise that there was so much involved in eliminating the cut-outs. As I said, I think it's a great knife, but knowing what's involved in the alteration, those resources might (in my opinion anyway) be better applied towards a new design.

I think the "S" is perfect the way it is...I don't need or want one with a solid blade...but Sal if you want to make one just for Deacon...by all means go right ahead.....Doc:D

Maybe engrave the solid handle with a fruit or perhaps even a cool (or hot) vegetable! :D

Seems like if you don't like the holes in the handle don't worry...after they fill up with food particles, deer guts, and lint...you'll have your solid handle....Doc:D

Not every knife can be a SD weapon or straight up edged tool.
Some knives can be fun...with sharp edges. The R/S series is that for Spyderco. :)
