hi to everyone,

this is my first post and I tought I share my newest knife with a couple pictures for you.

today my Byrd Raven arrived and I must say it is a VERY impressive knife, especially considered the price. I'm very pleased with the build quality and with its cutting abilities. it's not scary sharp, but undoubtedly sharp enough for a serious cutting tool.

usually I like backlock folders a bit more and this is my first liner lock folder. I certainly didn't expect the blade opening that smooth, I really like that. no problems with the liner lock to close the knife except when I flick it open fast, in that case the liner lock will jam a bit. but a drop of oil already solved that "problem".

okay enough words, here are three pictures of the knife:

I still own a couple more Spydies, but those are at my girl friends house right now, so I can't take any pics, sorry.

Nice score, hans! And welcome to Spyderco Forums!:)

I really need to get me a "full size" Byrd to test fly. I only have an SS Finch and a Firebyrd (which I keep in a kitchen drawer as my dedicated bottle opener).

Thanks for the pics!

Very nice. I have both the raven and the crow, and that crow is the smoothest knife I have ever opened.

Is that the non-black bladed crow? It's hard to tell from your pics. I was very happy to see that particular model come out as I really like the Crow's design but am not a big fan of black blades. Here's hopeing for an all silver version sometime in the future, possibly re-dubbed the "Dove".

thank you all for the kind words and the warm welcome :)

@ dedguy,

its not the crow, but the raven. and yes, this is the non-coated blade. right now i'm so impressed with the knife, that I serious think about to get the black coated too. I'm just not sure if I prefer the pe or the half serrated edge on a "tactical" knife....

hans, if your Raven isnt' "scary sharp" ....a little stropping on some leather charged up with the green "jewelers rouge" which i got from here:
http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=3&p=32984&cat=1,43072
will quickly give u the edge u desire....
truth is i've learned to sharpen my knives using my Byrds on a strop from Knivesplus shown here :
http://www.knivesplus.com/KP-STROP8-STROPBLOCK.html

which i then glued onto a wooden paddle....that way I can strop my knives while "kicking" back in the recliner.....instead of being "chained" to a desk or table while i stop/sharpen....;)

@ brian,

thanks for the advises and links.

for an EDC I don't see the necessity to have a scary sharp blade, but of course is has to be fairly sharp. I just don't think it is necessary that the blade is capable to pop the hairs off your skin. and lets not forget: the sharper an edge is, the thinner is it usually and therefore dulls also faster.

I used to sharpen my knives the last couple years with the 204 sharpmaker, which worked pretty good for me so far. the only thing I have to complain about the SM is, that the tip of a blade can quickly be rounded (what happend to me a few times) if one is not carfully enough.

however, I expect the lanksy deluxe set to arrive this week and give it a good try. I heard (read) almost nothing but good things about it, so this will be an interesting new experience for me. I plan to give my knives (I think I will start with my delica) a 17° angle with a 20° edge. I'm really looking forward to this and will post the results here.
