This is a not so raging debate at work. What is the open notch on the side of a Rescue model knife for. I say it is a vent to let the blade dry maybe? Enlighten us please. . .

This slot can also be used to open a shackel key if it is too tight. This may be useful for sailors.

Some have used the slot for turning the valves on tanks when diving. as well
