Is it true or is it some kind of gimmick?

Looks an awful lot like a gimmick to me. The simple fact that only the grooves are red signals to me that someone took a paintbrush or marker and filled them in.
The overall workmanship in the coloring does not look up to Spyderco standards. I'd call it a gimmick, and a overall poor one at that.
Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

Oh well isn't that a load of major crap (if it is fake)

Yes, those are aftermarket modifications, Spyderco did not color them. I can't remember the name of the company off hand, sorry... Anyone?

People that try to pass stuff off like that for real and true piss me off!!! But if a person like I have also seen on Ebay tells you that the knife they are selling is fake, that is fine with me, I just don't buy it. But when people try to jip people it pisses me off.
GRRRRR!!!

I didn't mean the knife was aftermarket or fake. They are actual Spyderco knives, just the coloring was done by another company, thats all. Sorry for the confusion.

Sal may clear this up but it is a real Spyderco. A wholesaler had a bunch left over at some kind of model change. Tried this to move the excess stock. IIRC Sal talked about this before.

Here's a link to a 1999 thread on Bladeforums which gives the story about the red checkering.

Actually, I think you just got a bad picture there, KK. It looks like they stayed between the lines pretty good to me in this pic. It doesn't float my boat, butt it doesn't sink my ship either.
I believe they also applied this enameling process on some Rescue models. I see no difference between this and some other mods like jewelling and engraving, or scale changing.

In a way all spyder's are limited as we are constantly upgradeing our quality. Those red painted ones are not so bad if you are into that kinda thang. Also those still have the old style plastic clip something to keep in mind.
You might be able to soak that c10bk in paint thinner or acetone and get that stuff off or maybe leave it on.
