Obituary of the late Mr. Common Sense

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has
been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since
his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be
remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:
Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
Why the early bird gets the worm;
Life isn't always fair;
and Maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more
than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in
charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but
overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6 -year- old boy
charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from
school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding
an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job
that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly
children. It declined even further when schools were required to get
parental consent to administer Tylenol, sun lotion or a band-aid to a
student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and
wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became
contraband; churches became businesses; and criminals received better
treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar
in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to
realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her
lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement. Common Sense was preceded
in death by his parents , Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his
daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 3 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, Someone Else Is To
Blame, and I'm A Victim.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you
still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

Hello tonydanose -

Let's face it, if it stinks it's probably $h*t. I oft turn to what www.wikipedia.org, had to say about common sense :

Common sense (or, when used attributively as an adjective, commonsense, common-sense or commonsensical), based on a strict deconstruction of the term, is what people in common would agree: that which they "sense" in common as their common natural understanding. Some use the phrase to refer to beliefs or propositions that in their opinion they consider would in most people's experience be prudent and of sound judgment, without dependence upon esoteric knowledge or study or research, but based upon what is believed to be knowledge held by people "in common". The knowledge and experience most people have, or are believed to have by the person using the term.

Whatever definition is considered apt, identifying particular items of knowledge that are "common sense" is more difficult. Philosophers may choose to avoid using the phrase where precise language is required. Common sense is a perennial topic in epistemology and widely used or referred to by many philosophers. Some related concepts include intuitions, pre-theoretic belief, ordinary language, the frame problem, foundational beliefs, endoxa, and axioms.

Common sense ideas tend to relate to events within human experience, and thus commensurate with human scale. Thus there is no commonsense intuition of, for example, the behavior of the universe at subatomic distances or speeds approaching that of light.

I use our revoltionary ancestor Thomas Paine, as the guidepost in the pursuit
of common sense.

Of course, he applied that form of common sense to the British and their
repressive policies with the colonists of that era. Common sense is one of the
manifold paths to true enlightenment.

Sadly, the "rule of law" has dispensed with common sense ; perchance to
a greater or lesser ( perchance greater ) extent. Laws, and the people
that create them - are imperfect. ( as is science, in this authour's opinion ) Anyone else?

Common sense always speaks too late. Common sense is the guy who tells you you ought to have had your brakes relined last week before you smashed a front end this week. Common sense is the Monday morning quarterback who could have won the ball game if he had been on the team. But he never is. He’s high up in the stands with a flask on his hip. Common sense is the little man in a grey suit who never makes a mistake in addition. But it’s always somebody else’s money he’s adding up. ~~~Raymond Chandler

Common-sense appears to be only another name for the thoughtlessness of the unthinking. It is made of the prejudices of childhood, the idiosyncrasies of individual character and the opinion of the newspapers. ~~~W. Somerset Maugham

A man of great common sense and good taste—meaning thereby a man without originality or moral courage.~~~George Bernard Shaw

Tony your thread reminds me of a book from back in the 90s. It was appropriately entitled "The Death OF Common Sense" by Martin Gross. The book is a really great read for those who long for the "good Ol Days".

Because nothing seems to make any sense anymore. When you look at the legal system it is easy to figure that the lawyers are the ONLY winners in that game. When you look at the tax system it truly is designed to keep us all as worker bees for a system that very few will ever come out ahead. The businesses treat us with contempt by having digital robots answer the phones for their customer "Non Service" is truly disgusting at best. Then they wonder why their business is falling off.

Everything from Cell Phone Addiction to the way people drive on the highways is truly indictitive of the absolutely insane nature of our new culture:mad: . Yes indeed>> Common Sense had been deceased for some time now.

It's amazing the things that happen and people do that make no sense. My favorite for the day: They want to pass a bill in Indiana so that people with Truck license plates have to wear seat belts. Two comments I heard on the news while interviewing people:

"I'll wear a seat belt when motorcyclists wear helmets"
"Seatbelts also kill people, so I'll never wear one"

Sometimes I just sigh...

Agree on all terms.

At times, I feel we ours is a society awash in stupidity.
