I just bought my first spyderco knife. It is the Stainless Steel Police C07. I fell in love with this knife when I saw it on the film Training Day. My question is how often should the blade be sharpened and what is the best lubricant to use on the pivot points.

I sharpen my knives when I first notice them getting dull.
I have been useing one lube, but would like to try some of the lighting everyone has been talking about but can't find any.

When sharpening a Spyderedge, use the corner of the fine triangle stone.
Four strokes on the groung side to one stroke on the flat side.
One way or the other, you pay for your tools!
Congrats Dragon, Welcome to the forum. Actually, my first spyderco knife was the same one you got. Great lookin blade. Sharpening just depends on what you are cutting and how often. When it starts to loose an edge, hit the stones. Keep it clean and lubed, and that knife will last a long time. Enjoy!!

Hello dragontigertatoo,
I also have the SS Police. It's been my EDC (everyday carry) since my wife commandeered my Delica!
I've used a few of the different sharpeners available and have come to the conclusion that the best one is the Tri-Angle Sharpmaker by Spyderco, Product ID: 204MF.
Whether you have a plain edge or SpyderEdge, it is hands down the best sharpener around. The corners of the stones work great on the serrated edges.
As Ryan said, frequency of sharpening depends on how often you use your knife and what you are cutting. I try to sharpen my EDC at least twice a month. This is with the understanding that I use my Spyderco everyday to open or cut various things including cardboard boxes. After heavy use, a quick touchup is all that is necessary.
As far as lubrication, Miltec-1, white lightning, tuff-glide or some other high quality lube should be fine. I also like the results of using tuff-cloth on the SS handles and blade, less messy.
Hope for the best. Be prepared for the worst. You'll never be disappointed.
Dragon,
Welcome! The Police model is a great knife, enjoy it! As Lsaulog said, the 204 is a superb sharpening tool. Sharpen as soon as the blade feels dull or as soon as you notice a tiny chip on the blade! Don't let a chip ruin a good knife.
As for lubricant, I have used 3 in 1 (the Mexican product) before w/o a problem, but I am now paying more attention to these guys' suggestions.

Congrats on the first of many spyder's.
We sell and use a lube called Balistol.
It is non toxic/ biodegradable, lube here at work,(SFO) We use it not only on spyderco's but leather, wood, Glock's and what not and it kills bugs dead fast!.
"Sure you loaned it to your friend and when you got it back the tip was missing."
