no, in spite of the title, this thread is not about elliot smith. ;)

i'm currently debating... as my next spydie, do i want a volpe or a quince kopa? i can feel it in my bones, i'll be making a trip to new graham within the next couple days.

now, i'm sure i'll eventually get both knives, so "get both" is not a useful answer... i can't decide which ONE i want first!

i want a new dress knife... something classy, with a great fit and finish. the volpe seems sized better for my usual EDC tasks, but the kopa (love the look of the quince!) seems better suited to the various offices i'm in and out of for meetings on environmental stuff, as the size is more NKP-friendly. it would also be my first kopa. and i wonder... which knife is "classier?"

anyway, i'll let you guys decide for me which knife will join my collection next... :D

as a side-note... if/when i score a volpe, i'd like to customize the scales. am i "stuck" with the shape the olive wood is in, or can i put differently-shaped scales on it? when kind of affordable materials would you suggest get inserts made from, in order to class up the knife? i might hesitate to mail the knife away for pimping, as i'm sure i'd prefer it in my pocket... i wonder if someone else could make them, and then i could screw them on the knife myself? whatcha think?

The Quince Kopa is a 600 piece limited run. It is the first one in over a year at a reasonable (under $100) street price, and the wood looks kind of pretty from the photos I've seen (mine should be here in a couple days, will have a better idea of how it looks then) so it may sell out rather quickly. The Volpe, on the other hand, is regular production. I'd say go for the Kopa first.

The olive wood on the Volpe does sit in shallow recesses. It would, I imagine, be possible to do a full scale that just overlaid those recesses.

Edited to add: Biggest problem with having someone make the scale or scales for you without sending them yours is that they would need to have a Volpe of their own. That might limit the list of potential customizers rather severely. I also cannot guarantee that the scales are not glued, as well as screwed, in place.

thanks, deacon -- i was curious if the olivewood was actually recessed...

In my opinion, the Kopa as you also mention is a very NKP friendly knife. Although limited in its application to mainly office duties, it is also quite nice and 'gentlemanly'. The Volpe is also classy, but sets itself apart by being that little bit larger, and I believe also in a liner lock config, slightly different.

I have a few Kopas, but not the Volpe, so am making a couple of assumptions. The olivewood does look very nice on the Volpe though, and as a collaboration knife it looks exceptional. I'm looking to get one myself, but due to my current Kopa hoarding tendencies I have commited to a Quince one already, so Mr Volpe has to get in line ;)

My vote for you....Quince Kopa (Tiger Coral is also awesome) then Volpe.

whoaa Clovisc, but I thought olivewood was "classy" enuff.... :)
the Volpe's blade is broad and had that funky cut out on the spine (i guess for the index finger) that screams "hey look at me"....
So IMO it wouldn't be as "office-friendly" as the Kopa.... this and Deacon's logic makes me recommend the Quince Kopa.....
Now that I've seen other pics of the Black Quince I like the "subdued" burls/figuring in the scales..... another one on my To Get List... :p

Kopa. I would not think even a second. I love this knife. IMO it is perfect dress up gents knife.

so the kopa is winning... which is fine with me... :D

i agree that the olivewood certainly looks classy, although i'd be well pleased if i could do a little something to my future volpe to make it stand out even more...

yea -- i have to go to a three day conference in WV, which means i'll be driving directly through bluefield to get there, and then directly through bluefield again to get home. which means two stops at new graham in one week, and my mileage for the journey officially reimbursed! :D :D think my wallet is as good as condemned...

I still don't think Elliot Smith stabbed himself in the heart... he was fighting with his gf at the time.. a little more than a little suspicious if you ask me.. I wonder what kind of knife he used.. RIP E.S.

I know the guy who was managing him at the time but he doesn't like to talk about it.. things that make you go "hmm"

Get both, should be the right answer maybe?

But I have to admit, I dont like either of those two that much.. :o

Get the Volpe, its a beautiful knife imho. The finish is very good, the Spider cutout looks great! And I think that it could be customized easily. G10, Desert Irondwood, Snakewood:D Think about it;)

i knew some higher-ups at dreamworks who didn't even know elliot smith was signed to their record label, and had no idea who he was... i remember them telling me this not too long before he died...   glad the band i was in at the time didn't end up signing with them!!!

yea -- morbid though it may be, i wonder what kind of knife ended elliot smith's life. the early albums on KRS were SO good. $10 says it must have been a kitchen knife.
