View Full Version : Bering Salt

Last night I was watching "Deadliest Catch," a show that fascinates me even thought I've never been to Alaska and know nothing about boats (though I do like king crab). At one point, someone was cutting rope, which lead me to think, "If I were in that situation, what knife would I use?"

I would want it to have:
1) H-1 steel (nonrusting)
2) Sheepsfoot blade (a somewhat traditional marine style)
3) An alternate attachment method, in addition to the traditional clip (think Snap-It or Remote Release)

It seems to me that the Snap-It EMT in H-1 would fill the bill, especially with the Kraton inserts. Grippy, good blade steel and shape, and strong attachment method. It could be called the Bering Salt, due to being inspired by a show featuring the Bering Sea.

Anyway, it was an enjoyable intellectual exercise to think of taking several cool Spyderco elements and rearranging them to come up with a knife for a different niche. I think it would be a nice addition to the Salt line.

I was looking at the Remote Release II yesterday. I would love to see something like it using H1.

We've definitely looked into offering a Sheepfoot Remote Release style H-1 Salt Series knife, and the idea is on our table of ideas (pretty full table). Salt Line is growing, if the model comes to be we'll absolutely let you know.

Interestingly we have an ongoing list of Salt Knife names and Vitus Bering who plied the Alaskan coast in the 18th century, and whom the Bering Strait is named after, is on our Salt name list. We've not used the name yet worrying that it would lead people into thinking the knife was designed for cold water use only? We're probably overthinking the name huh? We've discovered there are a limited number of sea and ocean names and as the Salt Line grows it gets harder to name our knives. Any suggestions we'd love to hear.

The bering knife - use a ball-"bearing" lock :)

I am sure "rust proofing" all the components of the remote release would be a nightmare. I think the Snap-It might be more do-able.

However I would wonder about how well it would serve. I could imagine a diver wanting to hook it to a D-ring, but how easy would it be to remove, especially wearing diving gloves. In that kind of environment a fixed blade is better.

I do think both the Snap-It and Remote Release (I have both in the older versions) make excellent backpacking knives. Often with the pack's belt it is difficult to carry a knife on a belt, or get to one in a pocket, but you always have a D-ring on the shoulder strap.

Problem with the Snap-It is that it's nearly impossbile to open, and difficult to close, left handed. A Snap-It style Wischard hook mounted on an Atlantic Salt via the barrel bolt might be an interesting alternative.

I wonder if it would be possible/feasible to manufacture an add-on hook that would mate with the clip recess on the current Salt line?

Considering most people's knowledge of geography and history, you probably are overthinking the name. I can imagine several people wondering where the ball Bering is on it. :D

People who actually know what are talking about should be able to connect all the dots...or is it "follow the table salt trail". :)

Wouldn't a ball bering lock be kinda hard to close with gloves like the ones some people wear on boats?

Over thinking, I think. :)

Is there such a knife? Cold water only?

In reference to running out of names:
You could use the names of many of the small seas... Beaufort Sea, Caspian, Baltic, Caribbean, Arabian, Arafura, Okhotsk, and Weddell, etc. Lots of other names to use as well, Hudson (Bay), (Bay of) Bengal, plus some of the mighty rivers as well, though not 'salt water' bodies.
Mississippi Salt might sound goofy (oxymoronic?) because those in NA know it's a fresh water river, but Zambezi Salt sounds kind of cool.

With regards to the Snap-It vs. Remote Release... I pick the RR for the easier of the two to open under all circumstances.

I'd have to agree....Definitely have to be a strong lockback...I had a D'Allara Rescue that was difficult to close with even only latex gloves on.

I think that could be averted if they use a caged BB lock similar to what they've got on the P'Kal.

Bering Salt sounds good. To me anyways. I'd pick one up in a heartbeat:)

I thought that "Bering Salt" was one of the hypothetical proposed name for the hypothetical H1 Spyderhawk??

Rope cutting? Crab fishing? Rust proof Knives? TV shows on Discover channel?

How bout a Aqua Salt?

Take a look at the original dates of this post. This idea was tossed around long before the "H1 Spyderhawk" thread appeared. :)

It was. That was me. Looks like I wasn't the first to like the sound of it though.
