I picked up a NIB Spyderench that in every aspect appears to be a genuine Spyder-made wrench (not a Byrd) but has two things I haven't seen before: a large magnet drilled & inserted into the side of the bit holder, and a blade marked Spyderco, Taiwan, AUS-8. Variant?
I would like to post photos but can't figure out Imageshack...

It sounds like one of the batch that was inadvertently released through a British distributor last summer. I hadn't heard about the magnet, but the blade steel upgrade jives with what I saw before.

Yeah YAB I think you're on the money on that one. The only one I ever saw posted with an AUS-8 blade is the one you are referring to.
Now the magnet is a mystery to me as well  Which I guess is why I am holding on to the 2 original Spyderenchs I've had for a while. I just know in my gut that they were the "Real McCoy" so to speak.
I distinctly remember the new Spyderench and the New Lil Temperance were both more or less promised to be in the line up over a year and a half ago. I know progress and new models take time however.

Something else to check. I seem to recall Sal saying they had replaced the phillips on the end of the diamond file with a rounded point to act as a detent to hold the handles shut. Just as well, since the small phillips on mine is only useful if you WANT to round out a screwhead
