View Full Version : favorite spyderco dress carry

since getting back from africa, my style of EDC has changed dramatically. over there, i'd carry nothing but bigger, rugged, utilitarian spydies for hard work outdoors... (ex: mili, pacific salts, police, tasman salt). now, working as an americorps volunteer, i'm in and out of all sorts of meetings constantly. i rarely getting my hands too dirty outdoors, and i tend to carry smaller, dressier, NKP-friendly knives.
i've been buying more "dress knives" as well... prefering the smaller "bling" or "techie" look.
anyway, what all of this is leading up to is... what are your favorite spydie dress knives?
i'm going to do a top five:
1. Volpe (although i'm not too terribly fond of the olivewood on mine, which is quickly acquiring blue jean scuff stains...)
2. R2
3. adventura
4. jess horn ZDP
5. big persian (although, a tad too "big" for the office...)

I mos'ly avoids wearing dresses in public. Around the house, though. . . . . .
Seriously, the burgundy Jess Horn ZDP 189 does very well. Discrete and light so it doesn't sag my pocket.

Little persian is just beautiful. Large persian is very elegant but the little one is better because of the size.
I am hoping the Viele 2 will be a nice knife for dress carry and I know that the caly jr. zdp is a classy knife for any occasion.

Spin with a web engraving. Not overly stylish compared to Sante Fe Stoneworks, but still unique and nice.
Eventually, I want a Sante Fe Stoneworks Ying/Yang Cricket though.

ATR is currently my dress knife. I kinda got a craving for Volpe, despite it's wrong handedness.

The shell inlay Vesuvius has a comp lock, which came out before the Cento 3 and 4. ;)

whoa! I never seemed to notice that. Now I know partly why people clamor over that knife over the cento 3. Never made sense until now.

Another difference is the inlay has ATS-34 vs. VG-10 on the Cento 3.

My BGCF Military is my dress knife :D
I haven't worn a suit since I was best man at my best friend's wedding. That is pretty much the only time I have dressed up in the last twenty years or so.

CF Delica and Almite Walker see about equal suit time.
If I had Copas or Kiwis, they would, too. :)
If i had a CF Walker, it would be my only suit knife. *drool* :D

Call me nuts, but my idea of dress carry is my army boots and the ss police in a boot rig  Out of sight, out of mind.
Typically I'll clip something small to my pocket (cricket, 'fly, spin), or IWB something bigger if I'm wearing a jacket too.
Have a feeling I'll be picking up an ATR at my local when my income tax refund gets in... see if they don't have the Ti in, might get the SS. Have to get a salbenza while I still can.

Never wore a dress, although must admit being a bit intrigued by Cold Steel's "Tactical Sarong". ;) :D
On a more serious note, my favorite "dressy" large Spydies are my Ironwood Persian, Birdseye Maple Atlantic, and now my Lignum Vitae Stretch.
Medium size ones would be the CF Caly 3 from Sal, M. Hunt engraved Mini Persian and Delica, and my new A. T. Barr One-Eyed-Jack. For small knives, it's almost always one of my Kiwi "flock", unless it's a really formal occasion. For those, one of my C27 Horns gets to come out of the cabinet.

Caly 3 or Viele, or Navigator 2. I still need to carry my Endura. I'm OC about it. Joe
Kopa Cocobolo or
C-83 Persian + Caly3 combo
All depends on occasion.

I never really "dress up." But if I did, and I did not want to carry a custom knife, one of my SFSW Kiwis would come along.

For public use & viewing, a G-10 Caly 3 first, then occasionally my CF lefty D3.
IWB or UCB (under cummerbund) for "other" needs would be Para-Millie or Mini-SERE (I know it's not a Spydie, but it's still a good, comfortable carry IWB).

hm. first reach would be for my micarta Calypso jr, then the small Persian or a Lava. the JD Smith has worked well in the past, too.
CF Caly3 just seems like the right dress carry for me.

Since I am in a business suit now almost every day (Aaargh--How the mighty have fallen:eek: ), here goes:
Lately--
Right pocket (with my keys and money clip) one of these:
Green Lum Chinese folder (love this one--sees a lot of use)
Delica 4 (lightweight and waved)
Kopa (don't carry it much--Apple Coral inlay)
Jess Horn red handle (don't carry it much either)
Left pocket has one of these:
Kris (engraved)
Chinook II
Yojimbo
Emerson Combat Karambit (sorry--I know it is non-Spyderco, but one engraved Spydie Karambit is doing yeoman duty in a display case on my desk and a non-engraved Spydie Karambit is in the top breast pocket of my "go" vest)
Sometimes there is a SPOT around my neck, and often there is a SpyderCard dropped into the front breast pocket of my suit jacket.
Other than that, I'm not saying--have to have a few hidden surprises:;)

Correction--the Jess Horn is burgundy rather than merely "red" in regards to handle type. I am a huge advocate of trainers--and those are red handles. Sorry for the mixup.
Also, Deacon, I guess I have worn a dress--a sarong or two for Filipino Martial Arts, and a hakama while practicing some Japanese arts.
Now I must go do something incredibly manly to redeem myself--like shave dry with a chipped, dull and rusty cutlass:D

I never dress up. Last time was as best man at my buddy's wedding about 10 years ago.
Should anyone put a gun to my head and make me dress up, I would still carry my Military or Endura;)

I don't mind getting all dressed up; in fact my job sometimes requires me to look 'representable'. My favorite carry for such occasions are my SF spydies.

Or if I feel like it, my black micarta Kopa and Mini Persian.

Tough to top the CF Caly3 or a Kopa, but I'll also say a D4 SS PE!

Well, my job needs to wear business suit and tie - the Caly 3 G-10 is my EDC and from time to time I feel some itching and take one of the Walker Carbon matte :D
... Should anyone put a gun to my head and make me dress up, I would still carry my Military or Endura;)
Arend, I miss one point in your statement - SERRATED ;)

But to be honest Peter, I really forgot to mention it:o

My "church" knife is a Spyderco Pegasus, but it has been engraved. I use to have a pic, but it was on an old computer. I'll get some pics again.

Pegasus? Don't think Ive seen one of those. Or even heard of it for that matter. *Googles*

The small Persian's got that great combination of class and style. But when I need something smaller I usually carry a blue almite navigator -- the handle material, the shade of color, and the silver clip all put together make for perfect "dressy carry".
Favorite dress knife is my black Micarta Calypso Senior PE.
Very light knife, innocuous black clip. Blade is big enough to handle my food cutting but does not attract attention.

Topping the list of Spyders I carry during presentations are the CF Caly 3 and the G-10 Caly 3, largely due to the way they disappear into the waistband and under a belt. If I'm feeling less constrained (such as presenting to military audiences) then I'm comfortable with more visible knives. The little Persian is a favorite even though it's hollow ground and thus harder to use. For me, the best size for a dress knife is around 4 inches closed. Smaller and it's too hard to cut an apple; larger and you feel you have to hide or make an explaination for it.
