Fellow Spydercoians,

I've been mulling over my next prospective Spydie purchase, and I think it's probably high time I got ahold of a Harpy.

Now, some time ago I was absolutely sure that I wanted a stainless handled one (I love those S/S Spydies) but in recent weeks I've been increasingly convinced that the G-10 model is the way to go; assuming I can find one.

Opinions, to and fro?

Thanks, Jeff/1911.

If you can find a G-10, I would get it. Better grip and discontinued. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

Jeff,

If you can find a G10 Harpy grab it with both hands. The G10 is much more practical for the uses that the Harpy was designed for. Like the Calypso Jr this is a knife which was loved by afficionados but couldn't survive in the marketplace.

I just picked up a G-10 Harpy at a knife shop in Osaka. If you can find one, I highly recomend this knife. The G-10 is perfect on this knife and gives it a great grip.

Thank you all, for your helpful comments. I think there is no question about this one. I'll let you know once I've procured.

Thanks, Jeff/1911.

Fellows,

I got interested in the G-10 Harpy listening to some of you rave about it. It sounds to me like a &quot;must-get&quot; Spydie. I've just been looking at some pictures of this knife and decided that it will go marvelously with either my Wegner or Wegner Jr. plain edge for EDC duty, as a toothy complement.

Thanks again, Jeff.

Well, it seems that I was mislead and that the G-10 Harpy I thought I could get locally is out of stock and more money than advertised.

I am thinking about buying a S/S Harpy, at least to start with and then when I find out how wonderful they are, I'll likely be inspired to search out one in G-10.

I can't imagine not liking any stainless steel Spyderco. I simply adore them.

Hi Jeff.
That's the way I did it. I got the SS version first, fell in love with it and then set out to find the G-10 version.

In the meantime you could try this site.

Best of luck in your search.

yog, ftk...

I think it's a good plan. Are the plain edged, s/s ones out already? I thought that was going to happen in 2002 sometime.

Jeff.

Hey, what up with this?

I was just looking through some images I have of various hawkbills, and I found these two pictures of the G-10 Harpy. One shows it tip down and the other tip up and I don't see that it's changeable on the handle, as some are (i.e - two sets of holes).

It must be that at different times it was produced differently. Have a look at these two images.

Jeff,

I may be wrong here but I think the first run were tip-up and used GIN-1 steel. I recall seeing one like that on KnifeCenter's web site. The later ones (like mine) are tip-down and have blades of ATS-55. They also have a steel liner to support the clip screws, which I think was absent on the first run. Can anyone confirm this?

Clay,

After reading your last post, I examined the image I have of the tip down G-10 Harpy and you can see that it says &quot;ATS-55&quot; on the blade. Look here for the picture in it's original form. It's quality was degraded when I resized it to fit the 400x400 limitation so I don't think was legible on the picture I posted earlier.

Sorry,

I wasn't reading carefully. This image likely displays YOUR Harpy, correct?

I notice that the blade polish, G-10 finish, etc look much nicer than they do on the picture of the tip up version. The tip down model also looks like it would ride very low in the pocket, judging from the appearance clip position.

Jeff.

Jeff,

I can't comment about the earlier version but the fit and finish on my G10 Harpy is first rate. You're right, the clip is very close to the top of the scale and the knife rides very low in the pocket. However mine has a &quot;Harpy trap&quot; from Mike Sastre and rarely sees a pocket.

Jeff, I just picked up a G10 this AM from OSO Grande (http://www.osograndeknives.com/. David indicated he had a few left. Good Luck.

Thanks Clay. That's what I was wondering about...the &quot;ride&quot;. I really enjoy a knife that sits low in the pocket.

Jack - Thanks for the reference to Oso Grande. I may just order one of those.

Sharp1,

Thank you very much. That's the place to order one from alright.

Cheers, Jeff.

Personally, I prefer g-10 to the stainless handles. I would think the stainless would get pretty slick when wet. And I think g-10 looks better.

Well,

I went out and bought the stainess Harpy today. It's a sweet little thing, with a not-so-sweet attitude. I really like it. I would prefer it without the drying vent in the side of the scale, as it's a bit rough on the fingertips and I don't really think I'll ever submerge it. Besides, the G-10 version doesn't have this vent, so how do they dry out their innards? This seems like a bit of an inconsistency to me.

Anyhow, I'm already making inquiries about the G-10 Harpy as I have now decided that I most certainly do need one of those. Grin.

Jeff/1911.
