WOW! I just checked it out. 210 lumens on one cell kind of like the 4sevens MiniX 123 BUT.....the one that you have has a tail cap activator. Mikey likes!

You know that the clicky switch is the source for most failures, right?

There is practically nothing that can go wrong with a twisty switch.

Easy fix . . . Use a momentary tailcap switch instead of a clicky.

SureFire.

I recently had my L1 modded to increase output on both modes. But even in stock trim it's an excellent light. Over-priced at $159 retail, I got mine for half off in used but mint condition from the B/S/T sub-forms over at the Candle Power Forums MarketPlace.

Zenith

That fixed knife looks really good, clean and sharp, could you share the details and availability?, thanks for the pic!

It is a neck knife, though a bit large, will do some measurements for you. It is a hand forged knife by a local blacksmith. Comes with sheath. I will do a long term review about it in one month, or at least just after the holidays, going camping.

Details about the steel: Saben Silver

I use this for forging blades. It's really tough and works well under the hammer. These are the specs as provided by Sanderson Special Steels

SABEN SILVER STEEL 1.2210 PRECISION GROUND DOWELL ROD B.S.1407 WERKSTOFF No

C 1.20

Cr 0.40

Features and Uses

Saben Silver Steel is bright finished rod produced from hot rolled bar by means of centreless grinding.
The high carbon content of this steel means that it can be hardened to give considerable wear resistance and the chromium content adds to the strength and hardenability
As supplied however, the steel is machinable owing to the annealing treatment given to it prior to grinding.
Saben silver steel is spherodise annealed for best machinability, the annealed hardness being in the region of 270 Brinell (Rockwell C27). On hardening and tempering a hardness of up to Rockwell C64 can be obtained. Being in the spherodised condition, the material offers maximum response to hardening and the chromium content ensures deep hardening.

Applications

Saben silver steel finds innumerable uses in the tool room and in general engineering. The user can select a size suitable for his purpose, thereby reducing or eliminating the need for grinding or machining the finished part.

Applications include screwdrivers, punches, shafts,
axles, pinions, pins, die posts, instrument parts, model parts, taps and drills for mild steel, engravers tools, and fine cutters.

Hardening

It is preferable to heat the tools in a controlled atmosphere. If this is not possible, pack hardening is recommended. A reducing atmosphere is desirable.

Heat to 770 / 780ºC and when thoroughly soaked through, quench in water. (sizes up to 8 mm diameter may be oil hardened from 800 / 810ºC)
Tempering will be necessary.

If it clicks, it's a clicky. I believe we mean momentary only, which offers some reliability.

In the topic of flashlights: the best and most reliable momentaries i have found are from Peak flashlights, i have a 17500 QTC stainless steel Logan that takes 17500 and any type of AA size battery and its really reliable and tough, the momentary on it is WAY more durable than the one on my L1 and also the operating force is better in single mode, that light is my favorite EDC, will post a pic of it later

Not really, the only time I had a clicky-failure was with a Surefire E2e almost ten years ago now. Never had a problem since, my Sunwayman, Nitecore and Jetbeam lights are still going strong for almost a year now (I rotate on a weekly basis) with their clickies. I have a twistie light on my keys that's also doing just fine, but I prefer clickies.

SQSAR, its a Frog Leg from Diaz Tools, a really nice knife.

Mr. Blonde, you have had good luck with your clickies, but really one of the weakest points of a flashlight is the clickie switch. tested both by companies as by final users. Of course some clickies are better that others, electronic clickies like the ones on HDS lights tend to last longer than purely mechanical ones, however mechanical momentaries are a lot more durable than clickies, the momentary in the Peak flashlight in my pic is a good example, i activate that thing a lot everyday even play around with it blinking to walls or whatever, and it still works like new.

I honestly don't see why that would be the case. Mine has never failed me. It is a light that runs off of a single CR123 cell, and it does have a momentary tailcap switch. You can press the tailcap switch as much as you want, but the light is never going to click on. If you want constant-on, you have to twist the tailcap to get it to stay on. Otherwise the light will switch off the moment you pull your thumb away from the switch.

It's actually an improved momentary switch because it allows the light to be dual-mode while still retaining the excellent reliability that comes with using a momentary switch. I've found it works very well. I liked the form factor so much that I had mine customized to update the LED technology. Told the guy not to change the beam profile on either mode. He did a great job.

I'm not monocrom, but I have a V10R Ti that I really like. It doesn't throw quite like a Surefire, but it puts out an impressive wall of light. The size is very easy to carry, and the variable output is very useful. If I know I'll be in a rural setting, I carry a Surefire (E1B or LX2), but if Im in town, I carry my Sunwayman.

The one downside is the clip. I attached an aftermarket Ti clip, and it's a vast improvement!

Studey,

Awesome, because I'm always in a city or town setting and I always EDC a light. I think my mind is made up now, I'm going to buy the Sunwayman. I actually want the Titanium version, but I really can't justify the cost of that bad boy. Especially since we have a big family and a lot of money was spent on presents.

Oh well, I'll have to wait till next payday, but then I'll put my order in. :) Thanks for the input, I appreciate it.

Hmmm, I really dunno SQSAR. I had the EP at 18 degree per side setting but with the geometry of the grind, I couldn't figure out the angle. The result does seem to be a bit acute since the 40 degree setting on the SM will result in a very tiny microbevel. The tip area does seem to have a slightly more obtuse angle.

Yeah, for light use it is probably unlikely that any switch will fail, but any clicky switch is probably 100 times more able to fail than any twisty.

Well, anyone who is an advocate for Surefire and reliability will talk all day about the twisty/momentary tail switch. The clickies and the L1 type tail are made with too much plastic, if they fall the wrong way they break. Many people might use the L1 or E series and it might last them a lifetime without breaking, including me. But they aren't the epitome of reliable, and if you need to rely on something, I wouldn't be going for that.

I know what you're talking about. I messaged Milky a few times. My history is basically: send milky a message, no reply, send milky a message, no reply, send milky a message, no reply. *shrugs*

Is that a Rohrbaugh R9 ( or however you spell it)? How do you like it? Do you find it a hand full?

Haven't checked this thread in a while.

Yes, it's a Rohrbaugh R9S. It's a great little back up gun. Recoil is stout, but not uncomfortable or unmanageable. I added grip tape to the front and back straps which really helps secure the grip. The grip is a little slick without it. It's expensive, not +p rated and needs regular recoil spring replacement. But, when size and weight are critical, it's great to have. It's small, light, smooth, unobtrusive and reliable. I use it as an alternative to a spare mag (NY reload). Very easy to carry, even in a pajama pants pocket.

Ironically, I'm one of the biggest critics of SureFire on CandlePowerForums.com

But, when it comes to SureFire or any other company, I give credit where it's due. Generally excellent lights, but some of their business practices are quite odorous. Biggest one would be how SureFire used the legal system the way a dude named "John" would use a working girl . . . in order to put a smaller competitor out of business.

As WESBC mentioned, your best bet is to email Scott. Thing is, Milky is in ridiculously high demand. Even I knew he was overloaded with customer projects, but it turned out to be even worse than even I expected. Plus, Scott is not a businessman. Even he has pointed out that fact. He doesn't modify lights for a living. Along with that, I've gotten to know him a bit. He has an artist's mentality. That does not mean he's a pretentious jerk. Not at all. But if you understand artists, you'll understand how Scott works. You can't rush an artist. You can't expect him to work when other things are on his mind, or if he's not in the right mood. The end result will be sub-par.

My customized L1 was, according to Scott, a relatively simple modification. And I ended up waiting several months for the finished product. That's how buzy he is, that's how many other customer orders were done before mine. Scott's work is absolutely worth it. But if you go that route, be extremely patient and prepare to wait several months if not longer.

I've been thinking about getting a CW9. How many rounds do you have through it?

rg02
01-15-2012, 05:06 PM
I used to own a P9. Great gun, but it was finicky with certain ammo. They take a bit to break in(300 rounds or so if I recall). I ended up trading it for a g26 because I like 10+1 a lot better than 7+1. The new cw9 I assume is just as good and carriers a much friendlier price tag. I think it just doesn't have the smoothed edges and what not that the P9 has.

My son bought me this Maxpedition EDC pouch about a year ago. I have not really used it till about three weeks ago. I kinda dig having most of the stuff in one place and not on my waist. It's still a work in progress, but I really like it so far.

Found this in my old display case. The lock never worked properly and I have been meaning to send it back to Xikar CS for repair. I instead came up with a better plan... Pro-file set! Gently shaped the liner engagement of the blade tang and within 10 minutes she was better than ever. Now she locks up like a bank vault and I am puting her back into the left side EDC rotation along side the H1 Dragonfly.

It's a TT PocketTool Edge Tool. http://ttpockettools.blogspot.com/p/knives.html Your wife shouldn't get to mad his prices are pretty fair.

Todd the owner=maker of TT pocketTool's has become a friend a fast friend of mine.

He makes some cool little tool's.

He's Sold out of Edge tool's till spring but has got some new Knife/Tool's coming out soon.

Belt, way too heavy for my neck. As it's a custom version from Mr Voxnæs, it came with a nice kydex sheath and a tek-lok.

I'm not a multi-tool fan but it's very light and thin. I find it extremely useful for anything I don't want to use my knife for and since no blade it's easy to fly with :)

Pliars/wire snip, file/screwdriver, tweezers, bottle opener, and tiny scissors. It was a gift but I think like $15-20ish.

Nice lightweight EDC Moroland

I like your modded micra and your FS jester.

I would like to suggest to you that you carry a method for making fire. A mini bic or fire striker like a nano striker won't take up much pocket room and could come in very handy.

Here's a link to exotac Nano strikers products at a store I more than trust http://www.jsburlys.com/index.php?app=ecom&ns=catshow&ref=exotacproducts

@ JAfromMN Thanks! I'll definitely have to grab one of those!
@ phillipsted Thanks for the compliment.

I used to carry a BM Mini Barrage. It's pretty nice, but the assisted opening scared the sheeples. That has now been relegated to hikes, bikes and camping with like minded folks. But once the funds come, I'll be replacing it with a Spydie. Still undecided though on which model. I just prefer the hole over thumbstud!

I just started EDC'ing some stuff, I bought some stuff at Miles Stair's Survival Shop (because Countycomm doesn't ship to Europe).
What I'm probably going to add is a little AAA flashlight and an AAA battery compartment. Next to these items I have the usual cell phone (Nokia 3310) and normal nothing-special leather wallet and my housekeys on a little chain so I don't lose them. It really does work, I have never ever lost a key of mine (jinx).

No camera but I carry a waved endura, wallet, keys. I just bought one of these to carry a bill in on my keys for emergency use. I like this one because if it's on the keyring it cannot come apart like this other one I bought which screws off. I was always afraid it would unscrew and I'd be out a $100.

Mr Blonde

Wow, how do u keep your things so prestine? Not even a blemish.

The quick answer: dedicated pockets, maintenance and rotation.

I rotate my carry spydies frequently, that way it takes a lot longer to collect dings and scratches etc... . I also know the limits of my knives, they don't cut stuff that's harder than the bladesteel. Flashlight and phone go in their separate pockets with no other stuff in it, that helps too. I also enjoy cleaning and maintaining my gear every so often. Also, the way this pic is shot, with the lighting, it hides a lot of smaller scratches. Furthermore, photoshop. ;)

Is that a Zebra pen on the left? And what kind of flashlight do you have there? Yes it is a Zebra pen and the light is a Zebralight sc51w. It's my floody little friend.

I'm adding a link to it at zebralight http://www.zebralight.com/SC51w-Flashlight-AA-Neutral-White_p_45.html

Thanks man! It's actually a skin, it's the white carbon fiber 3M film. It's got some great texture to it and protects the phone from being scratched as well as giving it some extra grip.

I got it from http://theluckylabs.com/ for less than $10. He does wraps for other products as well. I had one on my old iPhone and when I removed it to sell the phone looked brand new with absolutely no scratches on it.
