What was your first :spyder: and why did you decide on that one?

Mine was the Delica Wave because of price, quality, and the Wave feature

But Kopa Cocobolo get me hooked on :spyder:

Stainless Spyderedge Harpy. Was working at Target at the time and the SAK classic I had carried on my keychain for years wasn't cutting it. I was looking for the knife. Something I could beat the hell out of and not sharpen for months. I remembered as a kid being attracted to Spyderco knives, in particular the Police and did some looking around. The SE Harpy seemed the best option for me at the time. I love that knife and used the hell out of it tearing down heavy cardboard, cutting plastic packing straps, that sort of thing.

About 2 years later I finally got a real job making decent money and bought my second Spyder, a Karmabit. A week later I bought a Centofante IV. Been buying pretty consistantly since then. Have like 30 knives or so now.

My first Spyderco was a plain edge Scorpius. That was sometime in February 2005. I first tried out a Tufram Worker SE over at my brother-in-laws house. He used it every day working for the water department of our city. It was beat up but was a good knife. After seeing his Worker and Executive, I wanted one. I looked online and wanted a stainless steel Spydie. I couldn't decide between the Scorpius and the Delica, so I went with the more "non-mainstream" and bought it.

It was a good knife. I eventually traded it off to a member of this forum for a different knife. I still like the Scorpius and want to get another one but there are far too many on my list before it.

We'll see. So yeah, the Scorpius was my first. :)

An endura when they first came out and hit the area. It was a FRN clip, G2 ( Gin-1) serrated model which I still have in EDC able condition. The clip is still intact even. Second was a Delica not long later, and then I bought one for my brother. That was the early 90's. Joe

My first was a PE Cricket purchased in January of this year. It got me hooked-- a poliwog, salt 1 , civilian, captain, cf caly 3, and a dodo followed. I am always amazed at the craftmanship and high quality of each knife purchased.

A lefty PE Co-Pilot with the brass liners was my first. I picked it up at a gunshow to use as a money clip/back-up knife. My second was a PE Harpy because I liked the blade shape. I carried the Harpy for years before eventually replacing it with a G10 SE Harpy, later a few Merlins, and a CF PE Harpy.

I bought my first Spyderco, a Native 2 SS CE about five years ago. Man I hated that knife:mad:. Second and third were an Endura 2 SS SE, and a Vesuvius CE and hated those as well:o . Then I bought a FRN Endura 3 SE and all was right in the world.:) I had been a big slip joint fan until I discovered Spydies and have never looked back.

G2 SE FRN integral-clip Delica - I received it as a gift over 10 years ago. It's heading back to the Great Spyder Factory tomorrow for a resharpening.

The first Spyderco I bought for myself was an SE AUS-8 FRN integral-clip Rescue. I now have several Rescues, but still carry that one occasionally.

PE black SPOT, was looking at a very specific situation and it fit the bill nicely. Then a Matriarch which I sold following the end of a situation. Now I've got a CF cricket, and g10 and Tuffram Civilians en route, as well as a Waved Delica.

Hello All

This is my first time posting on this forum. My first Spyderco purchase was (two knives) made three weeks ago: Native plain edge CPM-S30V blade, and the Manix. I purchased both for several reasons. I found them esthetically pleasing. Both are time tested designs. My cutting/collecting wants were fulfilled with the pair. But what really solidified my decision was the knowledge gained from reviews. Now I am hooked on Spyderco products. Since then I have purchased the Endura SE ZDP-189 blade.

Before I discovered Spyderco I was rather into CRKT.

I thought Spyderco was waaay to expensive(especially over here before I had internet) and funny looking with that stupid hole in the blade.

Just out of curiosity I decided to try a payable Spydie (EUR 80 about $111:eek: ).
The rest is history...

It's the third from the top (bought before I knew better about SE:o )

I bought it in 2004.

Thank you, Mastiff. I was feeling my age there for a minute. My first Spyderco was also an Endura, SE, Generation I, bought when they came out in the 90's and I was a municipal policeman working patrol. I carried this blade for a long time, finally losing it in a surveillance operation near the Mexican Border after leaving the police department for a federal law enforcement job. The integral FRN clip of the Gen I had loosened up after years of use, and I guess it slipped out of my cargo pocket somehow.

Now, please, no one start a first Surefire flashlight thread or I will have to tell how I still have one of the original 6Ps from when they came out, and that the knurling on the aluminum is now smooth as glass and the finish is only kind of black in places:D . Hmmmm--maybe I should feel old:eek:

Hey, I've got an old 6P in that condition, too! It is stamped "Laser Products" on the tailcap. Since it was most often carried in a pocket with the Delica I posted about earlier in this thread, I think we can conclusively say that G2 steel is harder than old Surefire anodizing. :D

I bought my first Spydie in the second half of the Nineties, it was the C18 Wayne Goddard Jr.;)
It has a Micarta handle and Gin1 for blade steel.
Have to admit it toke me some time to get used to it.
But as they say: ONCE BITTEN BY THE BUG.........there's no way back.:p
It will always stay in my collection as a special item to me.

Hello, everyone!

My first Spyderco was a C05 Standard, purchased new in the mid-80's. It was used for a while, then put away in my belief that it was "too small" and the unchamfered edges "too sharp." Twenty years later, after reading a review of the Ocelot, my intrest in Spyderco was rekindled. I dug out my old Standard and found that my mature eyes saw a knife of ideal size for EDC. A little emery cloth to smooth the corners and it found its way to my pocket once again.

In researching my old knife on this forum, my long-dormant :spyder: virus became active again. Through reading many of your posts, I made my decision. I'm eagerly awaiting delivery of a Caly3, PE, G-10 as my second "first" Spyderco.

Thank you all, ladies and gentlemen, for your help in making this decision.

My first was from a bricks and mortar place (got ripped off  ) Twas a Ladybug FRN CE. Wanted it for a keychain knife as I found I was always using my pen or scissors or teeth to open up this or that or the other :) Chose Spyderco cos it was slightly different, the hole I thought was ingenious.

Progressed very quickly for me in finding out more about Spyderco...then got a totally different Spyderco ... Chinook II PE !!! so I went from tiny Ladybug ---> badass Chinook :D

Now I have a sizeable Native collection, Kopa collection, and a few other Spydies and hopefully will add about half a dozen Pink Delicas to the hoard..... the wife just does not understand

My first was an aluminum Peter Herbst. Turned out to be a poor choice, as it was fairly right handed, but the Spyderhole opener and the overall quality led me to keep trying. A PE S30V Native and an all stainless Kiwi, both much better suited to a southpaw like me, soon followed. That Kiwi in particular has served me well and faithfully. So much so in fact, that it's the one I recently sent to Spain and had engraved by Antonio Montejano.

What was your first :spyder: and why did you decide on that one?

I bought my first Spyderco knife at a flea market on Long Island, NY, around 1993.
It was a 60/40 Delica FRNR. It was in my price range, and the combo edge appealed to me a bit. (I have since become a plain-edge devotee.)

I still have the knife. I tied it onto a 550 cord necklace alongside a Fox40 whistle, for carry on the water. Each item (the knife and the whistle) is on one loop of a Spanish Bowline.

My first Spydie was a Cricket. That was the only that I loved from the Spyderco range. I already had a lot of knives and I bought it just to be able to say I have at least one Spyderco knife. I thought they are ugly and didn't understand those who loved them.
Today I have about 40-50... :D

Hey Paul,

Bringing up this old post tonight using the search for Ocelots. I value your opinion. The Stretch was my first knife and I know, your favorite. My question is this. Why send the Kiwi all the way to Spain for engraving? I have thoughts of having my Stretch engraved with my initials, some day to pass on to my son.

Worker C01P, slab side, 3 screw clip.

I believe it was the only Spyderco model widely available at the time, back around late 1981 (maybe early 1982). Spotted it in a display case at a mall cutlery shop in Washington. The glint of the all stainless steel handle and blade caught my eye, then that peculiar "hole". Upon my inquiry, the shop owner happily demonstrated the operation of the knife. He flicked the blade open, then closed it with one hand. Then he quickly flicked it open again with the "spyder drop". That was a memorable "WOW" moment for my buddy and I and we each bought one.

I still have the Worker, but retired it from use a while ago. It's been well used but well taken care of. Still locks up solid, no blade wobble at all.

Spyderco Native FRN ~ C41BK

I bought it in a Surplus Store here in Perth, West Australia, paid probably twice as much as I should have as a result and now buy ALL my Spydies direct from the USA.

Had the knife for a couple of years and then gave it to a guy who worked for me and he couldn't have been more stoked! ;)

I have since replaced it........I own most other Natives or will once my latest shipment arrives!

Let me take this opportunity to wish my fellow Native and Spyderco collectors, users and other reprobates a most pleasant New Years Eve and a most successful, healthy and happy 2009...........;) :D :spyder: :spyder: :spyder:

I got my very first Spyderco knife in 1995. It was a stainless handled Spyderco Mariner, SE, GIN-1 model. It wasn't long after that I got a Police model. Then I got a JD Smith when they first came out in ATS-34 blade steel. I remember the day very well.

The Byrd Pelican was on clearance at SFO the first time I walked in. It was the most affordable knife there and still a great value (very useful for cutting the padding for Pergo type flooring). I thought some much of it that I bought one for myself and one for my brother.

Byrd knives .... the gateway drug :):spyder:

My first Spyderco was a left-hand Police. Given to me by a friend in 1991 or '92.

First of many......:)

Mid '80s, my wife bought me a plainedge Worker.

At the time it was the ugliest damn thing I ever saw. However upon using it I found the real beauty was in the utility of it. One hand opening/closing and no belt sheath required. Been hooked since. Still have that worker.

My first Spyder was an SS serrated Police model my parents bought for me when I was 15, about 12 years ago. I used that knife for everything, even used it on a charter boat for a while. Despite hands that were frequently covered in fish slime and salt water, I never had any problems losing my grip on the knife.

I still have that one floating around in a box somewhere. I don't think I'll ever get rid of it, even though I don't use it much.

I was into Benchmade and Microtech big time. For some reason I bought this full sized Tim Wegner custom collaboration. That knife somehow got me to tune into the Spyderco forum and the rest is history.

Black FRN Ladybug, circa 1990-1991. I can't remember for sure anymore. I carried it for years, almost losing it twice. It still looks new. Didn't buy another until 2006 when a friend directed me to the Spyderco website to check out a knife he had just bought. From that moment, a lot of time and money has been spent on steel:D

I've only been seriously interested in folders for a few years. At the time I decided to start indulging myself in this interest, I was interested in both BM and Spyderco, so I started out with a BM Vex (If I had to do it again, I'd get a Tenacious...). I thought that the quality of construction was good for the price, but, for me, it was too long, too bulky, and too heavy in my pocket.
Then I started hanging out on the forums here so I could make an informed Spydie buying decision, and ended up getting a black-handled ZDP-189 Caly Jr., then in production. Wow. I made the right choice, that time. I think I have 7 Spydies so far - mostly LBKs, and I'm trying to wean myself from buying more for a while, but then I realize that I really would like a Lava, and their cost is only going to go up, and the new Dragonfly is going to come out, and the H-1 SE Ladybug, etc., etc., etc...
