View Full Version : Design your own Sprint Run!

This is my 500th post on the Spyderco Forum, so I decided to make it a fun one:
If our good pal Sal gave you the opporunity to create a limited edition version of any of any model in the current Spyderco line-up:
1. Which model would it be?
2. Describe your limited edition version.
***Just for fun, develop two versions: one which is more-or-less realistic, and one where you forget about real world price points and just go for it.
My own sprint run vision?
1. No, not a Lum Chinese folder, though I was tempted. Actually I'd want a limited edition Shabaria. I am a big fan of Middle Eastern knife patterns like the jamibya and shabaria, and the regular production model is almost perfect -- almost. These knives were typically hilted in silver and ivory, and the black micarta spoils the adaptation somewhat for me. Thus my Shabaria Sprint Run:
2a. Following the pattern of the updated Shabaria with two steel liners, I would add nickel silver bolsters, and change the black Micarta to Ivory Micarta. A polished steel clip for tip-up carry. (Actually I never understood why this model was tip-down only, since it has a straight handle and the same straight clip could be positioned at either end easily, or so it seems.) Plain edge only.
2b. My "money-is-no-object" version would be exactly the same except all of the plain steel parts (except screws)would be exchanged for stainless Damasteel. In sum: Damasteel blade, liners, and clip. Nicket silver bolster. Ivory Micarta scales. Tip-up. Plain edge only.

Wow this is a tuff one. I love my millie.
Practical: Cobalt alloy blade, green and blue g10 handles and a compression lock.
Crazy: Blackened damascus blade with rain drop patters, black and green g10 handles, and a compression lock.

Mine would be a Pegasus. Flat ground blade, VG-10 would be fine. Titanium handles, zapped for color. A Spydie etched into the handle, and zapped a different color.

This is a hard one... I am allways full of ideas..."what if this....what if that...why dont they..." you know how it is.... as for #1) Id remake the Chanook with S.S. handle similar to the police or maby more like the civilian.. and then elongate the blade a little and remove some from the width...I love the traditional bowie blade but I would like it to look a little more like the blade in pic #1 that i attached here.
#2)Would be a sleek, design that is a little less 'PC' and more obviously "fighter oriented" ...but with a definate utility capability.. the civilian, and harpy are exceptional "weapns" but its kinda hard to justify them as 'pocket knives' just a tad too agressive....Id design my fantasy Sprint Run after the knife in pic 2 with stainless and micarta handle very much like the Veile and an even 4" of blade almost exactly like the one in the pic. Least modifications for the spudie hole.

Great post Carlos. I love your ideas for the Shabaria, I would buy either of them in a flash. I'd like to see the Chinese Folder get a similar treatment but it's lack of liners and it's recessed linerlock precludes this.
I'd still like to see a sprint run of the knife we talked about as the 25th Anniversary knife. Calypso Jr with Damasteel blade and clip and ivory micarta scales. Oops, that was a Delica but I'd prefer to see the Calypso Jr given the treatment.

How about a Sprint Run Native like this:
1) Carbon Fiber handles with MOP/Abalone eagle feather inlay
2) Boye Dent of course
3) Plain edge D2 steel blade with skeletonized eagle talon cut-out in blade.
4) Laser etched SN
5) Custom belt sheath-no clip

Carlos,
Excellent topic. Well, since dreaming is free, I love your Shabaria ideas, you win at those, the ivory micarta would be _perfect_. Other ideas:
Viele - polished Onyx handle overlay, in different Onyx colours, or maybe Obsidian (yes, brittle, but for display it would be breathtaking).
I'd love to see some SS spyderbugs inlayed on a knife handle, not one, but various, a knife shaped like the Zowada, a bit larger, with bugs all over it and G-10 handles.
Terzuola with jade inlays, after all, his logo is a Mayan god and Mayans used jade an jadeite for their art and weapons.
Since "Lord of the Rings" is big right now (although I've been a fan for at least two decades), how about something in that line? A Sting-shaped folder for a hobbit?

1. Plain edge Worker with higher grind. Carbon fiber scales and titanium liner lock. Open spine with lanyard pin.
2. Same as above except polished stainless or titanium bolsters with decorative pivot. Liner would be anodized.

Ah Yesssss!
A frame-lock Military with a VG-10 flat ground blade, inscription etched and coloured in flat-black, titanium scales with a flat-black spyderco logo etched into the face and a titanium clip with the black spyderco logo.
Or...Same Knife with Olive Drab in place of the flat-black.
OR...How about a Ltd Edition (500 units) Toad with ruby, file worked titanium liners and mammoth ivory scales (and no clip)...ultimate gentleman's pocket knife (I get dibs on unit # 2).
Cheers! Jay

I already have the perfect Spydie- Native with CPM 440 spyderedge, g-10 scales and action so sweet it opens and closes just by touching the lock.
Somebody was paying attention the day they made that one.

Defender - while it is not my fantasy knife, the G-10 Natives are IMO the finest execution of the Native variations and one of the finest lockback knifes that I have every handled.
I have handled 4 of the G-10 Natives (I only own 1) and each and every one has had perfect, light-as-a-feather touch.

well carlos--
i would like to see a chinese folder with titanium handles, 3.5mm thick blade, and a spyderbug laser cut all the way though the handle with an extruded brass bug insert.
for the "no limits budget" : a bub lum tanto, compression locks, flat grind with stainless damasteel for both the handle and the blade with the extruded bug insert now in nickel silver.

Hey guys we've got some great stuff here, but I don't don't see Sal in here saying, "Hey, you guys are nuts!" So I guess our ideas are still too tame.
Clay,
It's too bad you Calypso guys never got your Jr. with both micarta and VG-10. I suppose Damasteel would make up for it though.
FTK,
The mind boggles at an all damasteel Lum tanto. I too am waiting for someone to produce a flat-ground traditional tanto bladed folder.

Hi Carlos, nice threat! Lots of great ideas. Here are mine:
1. The knife I would adopt for a special run would be the Chinook as I like its profile and the ideas behind the design. As it is though I think it is too thick and too heavy, so:
2a. I would like to see a Chinook with a no more than 2,5 cm wide BG42 or VG10 blade for better performance and lightness. The handle would feature a compression lock covered with carbon fiber scales for strength and also lightness. This would IMHO make for a faster and more carry able knife without losing the secure handle and multifunctional blade. Besides a compression lock is more interesting and play free than a lockback.
2b. Same as above but with a San Mai blade of Japanese White steel covered with a tough stainless steel Damascus and the kind of edge geometry Murray Carter puts on his knives. Well I can dream can't I!? :-) Just Damaststeel would also be nice though.
Great Thread Carlos. Sorry I haven't been on line for a while.
Lot of good ideas. Cerainly a creative bunch.
I've been carrying a concept model of a Stainless handle Jester. Kinda like a "modern classic". Might make an interesting sprint because it can be engraved.
