Greetings all. I've posted this on an SD forum and thought I'd post it hear.

I'm a big fan of the Forward Grip, Edge Up (FGEU) style of self defence knife work, and the Subcom happens to be one of my favorite EDC knives for a variety of reasons, such as the deep choil, fast open and compact size. In its current incarnations however, it doesn't work for FGEU.

On the way to work yesterday, I thought up the following concept of a regrind of a Subcom F to produce something more conducive. A regrind of the back of the blade similar to that of the Spyderco P'kal, or Shivworks Clinch Pick, and grinding off the normal blade (I live in a no double edge jurisdiction) I have tried to upload my poor MS Paint illustration, but I couldn't for some reason.

Given the bolster's lip, despite the lock style, the blade wouldn't close on fingers if it were used in the intended manner.

Input, critiscisms and suggestions as to how I can make this concept a reality (just a one off peice for myself) would be greatly appreciated.

Just thinking about it briefly, and if I'm visualising it right, my only bit of criticism is that if I'm reading it right, the edge will be the first part of the blade to be exposed. The blade might be a bit thinner as well, but I don't know if that'll be an issue

That said, go for it, given how cheap they are, it should be quite interesting. Personally, I'd use a file and go slowly on it, maybe pull it apart, put the tang in a vice and then file from there?

Interesting mod....Trailing Point Subcom....For your FGEU I would suggest you really look into getting the the Subcom FB model, you won't have to destroy the blade, cut off the logo of the designer, nothing to worry about when it comes to the lock failing in combat or closing up on you cause you could disengage it with the webbing of skin between the index finger and thumb on twisting motions, plus the Subcom FB is bigger (blade and handle) more to hold onto when using FGEU....Doc:D

I think this is the main reason I wouldn't be interested in this type of mod. I'm big on lock security under stress in general. But in the mod you're suggesting, you aren't just stressing the lock due to incidental stresses -- instead, every time you use the knife, you are purposely loading up the lock, optimized for maximum lock pressure! The idea makes me uncomfortable, like tempting the Fates a bit too much :)

I like new ideas,

looks interestingly cool!

when closed, the removed area might even be useful to catch
like a wave...

The webbing issue isn't a concern for me... I have none between my thumb and right index finger... makes dislocating my thumb very easy :D
