Here's a topic I want an opinion on.I have read little on this matter, but would like some input.I myself can instill countless events that I've seen or been a part of.I'm not turning away from it and if I can help anyone if the situation is ever present,or against a thinking mind I want to.When I tell you that just because there are people who commit crimes don't think they're dumb or slow. They're probably in all likelyhood going to hand you your*****all sliced up.In an 8x12 room, what choice do you have. What are your options.Think about that for a minute and give your opinion.

I was going to avoid this post but there are a lot of things people need to know if they're going to practice knife combatives, all aspects.I'm not a licensed instructor/or MA guru by any means, but I've seen things that would make you puke, survived and overcame them and won the game, that qualifies me I think to discuss this matter.Besides we need some action here.

If you are going to carry a knife for self defense you better learn how to use it, and as Bram Frank says, practice, practice, practice. Mark Mclung also has a couple of good books out if you want to learn some of the dirtier techniques.

maby im slow but what is the actuall question or discussion here?? Is it the pro's and con's? ...is it to look to your local ex-con to learn how to defend ones self? Ive had some training in blade defence as a officer in corrections and would be happy to share my insight from 3yrs in lockdown if I knew what it was you were getting at?

Nervous, I think they're looking for suggestions as far as prison knife fighting goes....please tell us what you've seen as a corrections officer, & you're whole opinion on "no rules" knife fights...

RE: "In an 8x12 room, what choice do you have. What are your options.Think about that for a minute and give your opinion."

If it gets this far you have made too many mistakes to recover unless the guardian angel of good luck likes you a lot!

In any closed system you take care of such things verbally and socially before the shank comes out.

If someone who maybe has a shank is getting on you, hit first, hit hard and hit often. Let the LEO find his shank in his pocket, not your guts.

If it does get this far: hide behind others, throw stuff, get your own weapon, and when he gets close enough, jam and slam. You must stop the shank from etering your body parts and you must deactivate his attack / his motivation by attacking his central nervous system, hard.

well first off.. as mentione before.. if you end up being "shanked" you either are an officer that didnt follow procedure.. or your an inmate.. hopefully no one here will end up as the latter. In any scenerio that involves an edged weapon the first step to survival is to rememer YOU ARE GOING TO GET CUT!.. alot of ppl "lose" fights out of panic and fear.. just as you know your going to get punched if you are a boxer.. if you live by the blade.. you will get cut! once youve come to grips with that .. and are no longer worried about "what if i get cut" then you can concentrate on your skills and your logical thought process.. that increases your chances of survival greatly!
As far as institutional attacks.. they rarely ever happen as a one on one encounter...Usually the one with the shank has two or more peers to hold, distract, or assist in the attack.. if its one on one .. its done in a way that it cannot be avoided.. and its more of a "hit and run" tactic. Such as walking past the victom and "bumping" into him/her with the shank hidden in the hand...the majority of inmates that die from attacks in the institution are victoms of the earlier.. they get the******kicked out of them by a group and one has the shank so the victum (and the guards) dont know where the blade is comming from.
Interestingly tho.. most attacks are what we would refer to as "thrusting" attacks.. where simply using multiple punctures is the only technique.. When slashing is utilised its almost allways with a razor blade from the razors that are provided.. since the razors are small the cuts are shallow. Rarely do they have the option to combine slash, stab, and empty hand, organised combat. Thats where you, the trained LAW ABIDING citzen will have the advantage.. come to grips with what your facing, and fall back on common sence and training. As the prophet Muhammad once said "The ink of the scholar is more sacred than the blood of the martyr"..with that and the thought that martyrs dont go home to hug their children.. should give you the motivation to know your enemy!
I still dont know what is really being asked here.. but if its to make us aware of the skills of the enemy remember that not all attackers are ex cons.. Ted bundy was a Lawyer.. and if you face an attacker with a knife, allways assume hes an expert! Do what you have to, to survive, to escape.. but ont get cought up in vengance, revenge or whos better than who.. the idea is to go home at night!

Dear Whosyour and others:

Interesting question and lots of good feeback -- just what I like to see on the MBC forum. Thanks to you all.

I think one of the main things to consider in a situation like this is attitude. The guy with the shank is operating from a "nothing-to-lose" perspective. He is beyond reason and probably beyond being affected by many commonly-taught unarmed knife defenses. As Jim Grover/Kelly McCann says, "Defense by definition is just buying time until you lose." You have to match or exceed his level of ruthlessness to survive and you must literally attack your attacker. Eyes and knees should be your primary targets as they are structural stops that can shut down your attacker effectively enough to keep yourself safe while you position to finish him off.

As Video Production Manager for Paladin Press, I produced a video with JKD/Kali stylist Joe Maffei and actually addressed this issue in the video. In fact, we shot the entire segment in a jail cell! The video is a great, unconventional look at knife tactics and is titled "The Reality of Edged Weapons." It's available from Paladin Press at www.paladin-press.com.

Hope this helps.

Stay safe,

mike j
