Just curious, what is the advantage of having a leaf-like blade?

I am not positive what the exact use of the leaf design is, but the shape does make for an eye pleasing dress folder IMHO. Also, the point of the knife is not as tapered as some of our other models, making the tip less prone to break in the event of accidental twisting when cutting. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

Ah, my favorite topic <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>. The wide blade and flat grind give excellent edge geometry, so the knife is a superb slicer particularly on deep cuts. It's also great for spreading peanut butter <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>.

The wide flatground blade makes slicing chopping and dicing, as in riding the face of the blade against your fingers holding the celery, carrot, shallots, leek or whatever quite easy. The wide blade helps to maintain even slices thru thick material.

Not the best apple corer, butt great for serving up a slice of the pie. &gt;&lt;g&gt;

This is one of the first knives that really caught my attention due to it's symmetry and flowing form. I have a question though, as much as I like the green colour, does the green almite fade or chip with use or does it hold pretty well to the aluminum handle?

I don't think the almite chips at all. I have an almite Michael Walker I bought used and it had been dropped on concrete, it has very localized dents into the aluminum butt no indication of spreading or loosening of the coating at all. I have not heard of any fade, although I have heard of some pocket wear on the edges on the green.

There is the &quot;gun metal blue&quot; Chinese which looks pretty much 'clearcoat' to me in the pics I've seen. (which might just be the best option)

Thank you for the information. I was just wondering about it because of the bright green colour of this knife. The Mouse is also almite-covered but since it's grey, it's hard to tell if it fades and I had no idea if it chipped or similar.

Ah, there's some interesting chemistry involved in anodization. &quot;Almite&quot; is a form of anodization. Unlike steel, when Aluminum oxidizes, it forms a very hard coating that does not flake off. Aluminum oxidizes pretty readily in air. Anodizing is a process where a metal is placed in a &quot;cell&quot; (like a battery) as the anode (or negative pole). The liquid in the cell also contains a dye. By passing electric current through the cell, you have forced oxidization to occur. Since there's a dye in the liquid, some of it is trapped inside the oxidized metal. So the green color of the almite is actually part of the handle, not just coated on the outside. I dont know how thick this layer is, but I'm sorry to say it is possible to scratch almite. My Navigator has a tiny speck of exposed aluminum. looks like a tiny silver fleck.

That's my explanation anyway. I hope I got it correct. My &quot;other&quot; major was chemistry, but I dont use it often so I sorta forget a lot...

Nice and clear explanation! You should've been a teacher (unless you already are one). I haven't taken chemistry since high school, that's about 14 years now since my last chemistry course, but this helps a lot and it's very clearly put. You are so, so right. I fell in love the first time I saw the custom version and there is no other knife, before or since, which has had such a powerful effect one. I've have had no problems with the Almite although I'm pretty careful with my knives. I believe the gunmetal blue Chinese Folder is a similar finish to the Navigator and is more grey than blue although certainly not clear (can't wait to get one).

I don't know why but the temperance jr reminds me of the chinese folder. The strange thing is that i love the look of the lil'temperance and the temperance fb (as seen in the 2002 catalogue)....but totally dislike the chinese folder.....Like my girlfriend always says, i'm weird.......

Thanks Kahz. I'm not a teacher, I'm a software developer. My Lum Chinese had a little scratched place where a clip screw scratched off the coating. I used a green sharpie to cover it and although it doesnt match exactly it looks pretty close...

Clay, I was born that way<img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>......All my life,i've enjoyed doing the things that people have found weird.For example, i love lifting weights (with collecting spydercos being a close second) and to chinese people generally, lifting weights is a waste of time....so even my family thinks i'm weird. Also, i'm a bit of a nerd, having spent a fortune on books and with my nose buried in one most of the time...

Golem....Sorry if i didn't express myself properly. I've also lifted weights since was a teenager.I'm also chinese myself and most of the chinese people I know, especially in my family and those in Malaysia where i'm from, think that its weird.Just my personal observation. No need to get upset. The statement 'most chinese people' was in reference to my own experiences. No offence meant.
