I would probably work for a little while until the adhesive starts to slide of the tape and then it would turn into a sticky, gooey mess.

I think it's a neat idea but would never do it or carry it because of what NativeAmerican said.
Plus I think a Duct Tape wallet would look tacky as heck and I prefer either leather or Maxpedition type nylon.

I have one. I bought mine though for $10 at a local shop. It's a Ducti. Good quality, no stickies, it's a tough wallet.:D

One year I went to a summer camp and someone there (camper or counselor, cant remember) knew how to make them. I learned and made 5 or 6 wallets from tape (including one from clear packaging tape).
The wallets are not sticky or fragile if you make them correctly, and they can be fairly small too. You can make it with whatever number of pockets you want and you can even chose the number and orientation of the pockets (vertical or horizontal). I made one wallet with a window similar to those found on common wallets, but just big enough to see and scan a bar code on my lunch card.
Basically, the technique is very simple. You cut a whole bunch of tape pieces out to the length you want your wallet to be (the length of a dollar, for example). You then stick them to each other like shingles, one half way down the next, which is half way down the previous, etc. Once you get it wide enough, you basically just start folding it so the sticky sides meet. I don't remember the order or how you make certain pockets, but it is not difficult and there is a lot of creative freedom.
BTW, google is really good.

A lot of years back, I drove a 1965 Mercury that I inheirited from my dad. The car was a beater, and the stuffing was coming out of the driver's seat. I was saving for a new car and didn't want to put anything into the old one that I didn't have to. My inexpensive upholstery solution? Duct tape. I completely covered the front bench seat. It looked OK and worked - right up until the first warm day. The warm adhesive worked out around the tape and stuck my jeans and me to the seat:eek:. I had to about pry myself out of the car.
I think I would pass on the duct tape wallet.

Having made several things from duct tape I reccommend gorilla tape:. Many expensive tapes, including permacell gaffers tape leak adhesive. I have not experienced Gorilla tape leaking adhesive, but when I make something I'm careful about cutting it so it's not sticky to start with.

The Ducti I bought carries about 10 of my cards, flip photo id holder with about 8 extra spaces for other pictures, and of course all my cash. Plenty of room. Also has snap closure buttons and two metal lanyard rings integrated into the wallet.

How harsh are the chemicals from the gorilla tape.
