My dad had never bought himself a good knife in his entire life, and I thought I'd get him a Spyderco since thats what I use everyday, he lives and works on a farm and needs a good blade(half serrated),but would also like to get him one that would fit as an everything kind of knife. It can't be too big because he is an old guy, and they don't like big knives. I was thinking of a c66pbk, any suggestions?

I'm an "old guy" with 4 grown sons and the spyderco I like
the most is the Calypso jr. lwt. If your dad is right handed
also look at the dyad lwt. The thing to remember is us "old
guys" aren't used to pocket clips and may want to carry the knife
with the clip. So get a knife the clip can be removed from.

There in one other knife you dad might like that is not a
spyderco......The Kershaw " Double Cross". It is a neat
one hand opener that has linerlocks on both blades and fits
neatly in you pocket because it is a true "pocket knife".
Again it's a real handy knife if your dad is righthanded.

In the under $100 US range I like the Native or the Endura. Both very functional.
Over $100 US range The Wenger is nice, Also the Lum Chinese but it is a little flashy.

Maybe a Stainless Steel Delica? It doesn't come 50/50 though, like the FRN version.

You can still pick up a Worker at a few places, still Spyderco's best general-purpose design IMO. Again, no 50/50 edge. Maybe spring for the Commemorative Worker, aluminum handle with plain edge VG-10, lightweight and a beautiful knife.

it think the wegner is one of the best all around knives out there it is 40/60 if he likes a little more of the serrads. i got a calypso jr. light wieght fully serrated for my stepfather and he is in his mid sixties. if my father was still a live i might get him the same thing. however, he aways carried a victornox, that he loved, so i think i just might have bought him a santoku for cooking.

I would normally say the Native lightweight, but if you think he might find the shape a little too "agressive" then go for the Wegner, it's simple but very functional.

On a side note.
Brother has never had a decient knife, but asked me down the other week to sharpen his new "knife" that he had just bought for £2 ($3). Well to be honest this "thing" offended me so much (I have teaspoons made of better steel), that I insisted I buy him a decent knife for Christmas, I had planned on making it a Native Lwt, but he refused saying that it would be a waste of money to spend that much on just a knife.

Do the right thing ther Crimson Whirlwind; get him a "Mouse" to clip to his suspenders, or great fro IWB carry too. It is heavy enough to leave in the bottom of a pocket too, Gotta love that little skinner. The Native would be my second choice for him.

Red Tornado,

Well, everyone seems to feel like recommending, so here I go. If he never had a good knife but he's older and not into flashy things, I would recommend a Jess Horn, either in micarta or the lightweight. It's a good, small to medium, non-flashy knife, and the clip can be removed as well. I think that the Horn is the basic, "designer" knife that everyone must own, and it's a winner gift.

Ack, I don't think there are half-serrated Horns, are there????

Oh, well, my second recommendation would be what others here have mentioned: a Native or Native II.

I change my mind - I would go with what khaz say's. You can never go wrong with what a cute girl say's to you.

Rico,

LOL! Well, yes, the Horn is the perfect gift or initial knife, but I am trying to remember if there are half-serrated ones, but I don't think there are. Anyone?

IMHO,

The Native FRN is a well-rounded knife that feels great in the hand with excellent handling characteristics and ergonomics.

It's my current EDC and has yet to disappoint me.

You can also start with the Endura. If the Endura is too big, try a Delica. My second favorite knife. Unfortunately no 50/50, though.

*Correction* Thanks for pointing out the 50/50 on the Delica. Was thinking of the Police not Delica. Call it a B.F.

All are good suggestions, the wegener is an awesome knife, but a little on the large side, the delica was my first choice, but I worried about him breaking the tip, a horn is a good knife, and they did used to make one half serrated, but where do I get one?

Okay, 2nd try. If you like the Wegner, you will really like the Wegner Jr. Although discontinued, still available from a couple of places in the 60/40 configuration.

Try:

www.beckscutlery.com and/or
www.johnfjensen.com

Both are reliable dealers.

Red - I've just bought a Frn handled Jess Horn combo edge from www.WorldWideKnives.com and it's now become my EDC. The blade is really sharp but a wee bit on the thin side maybe.

It's really light and feels great in the hand and I'm tempted to seek out a Micarta handled version.

I have a Frn 50/50 Jess Horn, great little knife but it is probably not suited for hard use.I also have both of the natives in PE they are my favorate spydies. It took alot to take that away from my Endura.
