View Full Version : Info on Executive?

I recently acquired a small stainless steel folder which I believe may be an "Executive" based on the descriptions I found under the search function here. One side of the plain- edged blade is engraved "SPYDERCO" and the opposite side is engraved "SEKI-JAPAN" (there is no mention about the blade steel material). It's pretty stout and looks like a Worker without the false edge. (If it helps, the clip shows "U.S. Patent 4347665 FOREIGN PATS PEND"<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>. The handle measures 3-1/4" and the blade measures 2-3/8".
Assuming it is an Executive, I'd like to learn more about this knife. (I'm too cheap to buy "the Sypderco Story"<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>. Production dates? Approximately how many made? Rating as a collectable? etc. Thanks.

I can't help with numbers but I do know that they were designated the CO4 and produced around 1983. Their size seems to make them quite popular with collectors.

Thanks Clay. Another thing I noticed is that the edges of the handle is not beveled like the other ss handled Spydies I own--this makes the slab look thicker when in fact it probably is of the same thickness. Also the ss surface seem to be more polished--almost mirror-like compared to my other ss handles. The knife came in a blue box with a yellow adhesive label with the printing "1004R Executive serrated right hand" (actually this is a wrong box since my knife has a plain edge). If this is an original factory box, it must be from awhile ago since I have not seen anything like this in the last few years. (Note: I've been collecting Sypderco knives since only 1999).
On the one hand, I'm hoping and dreaming that this might be an early version that is highly collectable. On the other hand, I hope it is not too collectable so I can actually use the knife.

I don't have my copy of "The Spyderco Story" at the moment so I can't check up on the handle edges. I know the original Workers were squared off but later ones were bevelled, however I don't know if the same applies to the Executive. I'll let you know if I find out more.

Thanks Clay. I checked the archives using the search function and saw a post by Sal stating that some of the Executives were made with "chamfered" handle edges (I assume that's the same as beveled) and some were not.
The more I handle this knife the more I like it. The high polish (near mirror) finish on the ss handle makes it look like a custom piece. With the recent trend towards smaller knives, I think an upgraded C04 Executive with VG-10 blade and ss non-beveled handle edges should be given consideration. The 2- 1/2" blade should make it acceptable in most places. It is a size in-between a Delica and Dragonfly or Navigator.

Toothed,
I think it's already been done and called the Salsa <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>.
