View Full Version : Wow @ the Native III

I just got my PE Native III today. I've never owned one. I've had a few standard S30V Natives but this baby takes the cake. I love this thing TONS. This may just be my "grail" knife. I never thought I would like a Native III. It just doesn't look like it would be a a "great" knife. For me however it is. It's nice and hand filling. It is not as bulky as I thought it would be. I love the wire clip. I love how the butt end is a little bigger so it helps you pull the knife out of your pocket. It's very sturdy, and solid. It is THE most comfortable knife I have ever held in my hand. It's unreal. I cannot believe that I have never tried one. I can get a full 4 finger grip on the handle without even using the choil. I prefer the choil as it's more comfy that way. :) The icing on the cake is the jimping. It's the big "old" style. I love it.
This is a knife that I will have to get backups of. This is nuts. It's just hard to believe that I have gone through about 70+ knives since 2005 and that I never held a Native III. I like this knife more than any other knife. I'm not sure why, I just do. Well, yeah.......I know why, I just listed the reasons above. :D
I'm a little excited. Now I only wish that Spyderco would make a few other variations of the NIII. Man, what a great knife.
I have a lanyard coming for this thing from someone I now consider to be a friend in Australia. I'll put it on this knife and this will be my main EDC for a good long while. So, if anyone doesn't want a Native III that they have, send it my way. ;)
I will for sure add a thread to the picture forum with lots of pics as soon as I can get some good daylight. :)

Why/how exactly do you like the Native III over the S30V Native? Does the S30V Native just not work for your hand? It doesn't for mine.

Why/how exactly do you like the Native III over the S30V Native? Does the S30V Native just not work for your hand? It doesn't for mine. The primary difference would be the handle. Instead of being a flat slab, it's contoured like the grip of a target pistol, with palm swells, fiinger pads, and heel rests. So it's considerably more ergonomic. The tradeoff is thickness. For some, that's an excellent trade, for others not. Probably why Spyderco continues to make both. I'm with you, preferring the C41 at least 90% of the time, but can well understand why some prefer the C78.

I meant that I don't care for the C41 Native (S30V). I've never held a C78, though.

SimpleIsGood229: the Native3 "feels" like a bigger knife that also seems to fit bigger hands well with its thicker handle profile.....also the jimping over the spyderhole are "raised ribs" instead of lasered out grooves found on the C41...
Congrats on the C78 David.... sometimes perfection doesn't have to be expensive.... ;) Calls for an encore celebration.... :p

felly,
Yeah I'm gonna have to try to find a blue one. I don't care really if it has the forum 2003 on the blade or not. I know there are some out there without it.
I will also have to get a serrated one. :)
Other than the 3D handle, the different top swedge, and the wire clip, I really like the more rounded index finger choil. What a great knife. :)

G'day David,
I told you it was a great knife. IMHO EVERY :spyder: nut needs to have at least one of the Natives in either I, II or III incarnation. I prefer the Native III PE, and it is one of my staples in my EDC rotation.
I have a few more 'harder to procure' Natives coming my way, but alas the blue FRN one in nude form is one of my 'LOST BOYS'. So Felly....if you hear me then keep the other eye out for me ;) ....same goes for all you other :spyder: mates out there.
The Native is what got me hooked onto blades and Spyderco in the first place, and I doubt it if I will part with any of them without much pain.
Oh, and BTW David, check your PM's :D . And of course we shall all be looking forward to your additions to the "Native Appreciation" thread (OMG< I don't think I have posted my photos there yet  sacriledge ! )
Cheers

Not any more sir. :)
Now that I have tried a Native III it seems my search may be over.
I'm being entirely serious too. I never would have thought this would be the case but it is.
I feel like I have found "The knife".
On a side note:
I noticed that there is a little "Sal" stamp on each side of the butt end of the knife in the FRN above the barrel bolt. :) Pretty cool.

:spyder: Huh. So the handle's longer than the wally world native. I can't comfortably hold the s30v native without using the choil, which I find irksome. :spyder:

Glad to hear you like the Native III David, and I can't wait for the pics!
I've wanted to try a Native III for a while, but never could get up the courage, based on impressions of the S30v one.
I've always sorta liked the S30v Native, but the feel just wasn't right. I also think the III swedge looks better. When you do the pics could you do a comparison between the two?

Its funny how the best thing for us, can be right in front of our eyes and we dont even know.
Ive got the USA Native cpm s30v blade.Beautiful knife it is.
I want to handle a Native 3 still and make a positive decision on purchasing.
I'm a huge fan of thin handled Spydies, but exceptions can be made.
Will you invest in a spyderedge Native3 as well,i presume?
Oh yes,i love VG10 steel. That will probably knock the final nail in the coffin on my decision on a Native3,but a spyderedge first.

Very high praise, indeed. I hope the long term use provides as much satisfaction for you as well. I know I like the 3D grip of the D'Allara. Maybe I should try the Native, too?

David,
When I went looking for a knife that scout age boys would use I came upon the C78PBL. My Son had been using(and still does) a BFC C41GPSBL. For boy scouts that achieve the eagle rank I Have something for them.

I've been using a non engraved one for whitiling a walking stick.

My favorite thing about the Native III, is that it packs in more blade in less amount of space. If you look at the Native vs the Delica, the Delica has a lot of "wasted space", while the Native has close to none.

Now I am compelled to get one. I love knives that maximize the most blade in a handle. Is the knife pocketable? The D'allara looks like hell to carry because of the width. I want to make sure the Native 3 isn't like that. Looks like its about the same in the pocket as a Delica? I thought the native was nice and pocketable.

Great shots Spydiman ! love the camera work :)
I have the Native I, II and III. I choose to use the Native III as one of my EDC rotations. It seems to find itself in there a fair bit due to the wire clip and FRN scales, packed with a very capable leaf shaped blade.
Capt Carl, it is about the same size in the pocket as the Delica...actually similar in size when open as well. I see and feel the Delica as a working knife for general utility, and the Native as a general utility knife as well, but with the leaf shaped blade and broader handles the Native has within it a more sinisterly capable talent ;)
Pink Delica 4 example shown below with a Native III.

Carl you can't go wrong on a Native 3 . I barely notice the slightly thicker handle when pocketed compared to my D4W. I prefer this one for a little more rougher tasks as the extra blade after the edge will kick in. The handle is extremely comfy in long term use for me i have small to medium handsize.
I could only come up with one negative and that is for people with closetlid sized jumbohands as the recoils might be a little small for them.
Furthermore if you want a lightweight version of a mini manix/ para i think this is a good choice.

That's a nice comparison shot between the NIII and the D4 Dan!
After being a huge fan of the Delica for so long I now realize why I like the Native III better for everything. Larger blade in smaller handle. I can get a 4 finger grip and not have too much handle left like the D4 has. The blade has a nice point unlike the D4. The grind is higher, and since it seems to be a hollow saber grind which makes it sharper (at least to me). I also like the thumb ridges instead of the very find jimping. The 3D handle is better. I like the wire clip better too. There is not one thing that I dislike on the Native III. I will for sure be getting multiples of this knife in whatever varieties I can. :)

David Lowry, Congrats on your Native III! That's the first Spyderco knife I ever purchased and immediately fell in love with it. You're bit now, no known cure, very addictive, only remedy is to get more. Just bought 3 more variations (one a gift to one of my Grandsons, his first "real" knife).
