right, i decided to get a calypso jr. for christmas, i can't decide which to get tho, i devided on a plain edge blade, but should i get the SS handled AUS-8 version or the FRN handled VG-10 one? i keep hearing rave reviews about the VG-10 and how great it is, whats the difference between the two types?

i have a police and a harpy so i'm fond of SS handles and i've always thought of FRN as a poor mans G-10, i'd appreciate any input whatso ever to help me decide between the two.

The tradeoffs between the two models are very clear-cut, so assuming you know your own desires (which I admit isn't always easy <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle> ), the decision should be obvious.

The stainless steel version will have stronger handles.

The FRN version will be much lighter weight, plus VG-10 demolishes 8A when it comes to edge-holding.

Is the stainless version still using a sabre grind? If so, that's another distinction: the FRN's bleeding-edge cutting performance, versus the stainless version's more average-for-this-class cutting performance.

For myself, I tend to like lighter, more-carryable knives, and VG-10's edge-holding is a big winner for me, and frankly, the full flat grind alone makes this a slam dunk. But, if you're the kind of guy for whom FRN handles feel cheap and flimsy, you might be happier with the stainless model, sabre-grind and all. 8A steel has some things going for it -- it sharpens up easily to a scary edge, for example.

Just as Joe said &quot; The full flat grind(Vg-10) alone makes this a slam dunk&quot; in
his referance to the FRN handle Calypso. While stainless steel is nice , and I own
a stainless model, the FRN is much more comfortable and SECURE than the slick
stainless. On a knife with a blade a sharp as the Calypso I want a REALLY GOOD
GRIP on the handle.

Get the stainless steel. I like that solid heavy feeling of a ss. It just seems that the ss is so much better built than the lightweight.

In the land of knives, Spyderco is king.

got out of touch, back after 11 days of too much damn homework...

I have used the FRN/vg-10 for just under 2 months... it's great!

I tried to compare my knives to it, but gave up.

We all start with 10 fingers. Those with Spydies have 9 to spare, Still need a thumb. Good thing I still have 8 to spare...
