I think the R since it is bigger, but if I got the R I wouldn't use it..I would put it in a display case....the only one of those I would probably use would be the CF Dragonfly and maybe not then. So if I were you I'd get the R or CF Dragonfly. The Q is cheaper than those so you can get money for that easier later on

OK, I'll be the dissenting voice . I'd get the CF Dragonfly. It's a really elegant "church knife" with a wonderfully thin flat ground blade.

CF Dragonfly all the way.

I'd get the Dragonfly. They're getting hard to find. If you did a search on eBay, you'd find a few Q & R's.

BTW, you've got mail, J Smith.

I received my Pink Cricket, looks great. Now I know what all the fuss is about! I'll most likely pick up a pair of Crickets for myself.

I just received a Starmate I won on eBay. Nice knife, just not in New condition as described. It's numbered #457. Obviously worn & "stains" on blade & handles. Will try to work out with seller.

My "HK" Q should be here shortly. Hopefully no bumps & bruises on it.

J Smith, I found a serrated CF Dragonfly locally. Small world, bladeart.com is down in Miami which is a hop, skip & a jump from me. I picked up the last one they had. Great customer service. I also found out they have the Mouse in stock for an incredible $77.97 + S&H. I'm in the process of picking up one of those, too. If you're interested, just let them know I sent ya.

Lsaulog,

Enjoy "El Grillo"! It's a nice strong little knife, although, I am keeping it for "special ocassions" just like J Smith says. My current EDC's are "El Ratón", of course, and a SS Native II.

So, you are in SpyderHeaven there? That's a great price for a Mouse, don't let it pass J Smith.

Lsaulog, Starmate sure looks nice in the photo, that's my next purchase, unless I find a Lil' Temperance, which... I actually found one on the Internet for a good price. January is just around the corner, so I'm saving up!

Hi Kahz,

Nice to "see" you on the forum!

Nice photo of the kids!

What happened to your JD Smith? I thought that was your EDC. The pink Grillo will not see much action, if any. It will probably be passed around the family at Christmas but after that, it's going to be put away for safe keeping. My other half is very attached to her Delica which is her EDC.

The CF Dragonfly will also just be passed around but after that, it'll be put away.

I am probably going to get a pair of "regular" serrated Crickets for EDC. One for me, one for her. I am anxious to get El Raton. You've raved about it every chance you get so I just had to get one.

I loved the Starmate when I saw it. I wanted one very much & I found one on eBay at a really good price. The problem is that what I received is not what was advertised. It's definitely not "new in box". Oh well, can't win them all. Will try to resolve with seller but we'll see. Still want one, just new not used.

SpyderHeaven? Nah, but I'm getting closer! Still need a few more!

Lsaulog,

JD Smith, Remote Release, Q, Jess Horn, and Pink Grillo are tucked away in the knife drawer. I have a weakness for SS and anything silvery, must be that heavy metal/punk rocker in me...

I do want something that is not slippery for EDC, but I just _NEED_ a new knife. I am sure you understand this need. It's almost incontrollable... so, the Starmate better beware.

Glad to see you still have Spydie Fever. As you know, I've been buying like there's no tomorrow!

I've worked out the problem with the Starmate & seller. He's taking an additional percentage off along with his sincere apology. There was a bit of a mix up with the "stock" that he took over from another dealer. Was all suppose to be new but it wasn't. Oh well, at least their customer service made up for it. It's better this way.

I seem to have fallen in love with the Starmate! Oooh, the sound it makes...click...ssshNICKK! Very smooth deployment thanks to what looks like a little ball bearing. That's what gives it that little click sound before the ssshnick! The blade is very well executed. At a beefy 5mm, it's very beautiful. I love the 60/40 serration. Seems to fit this knife very well. If you wanted something less slippery, you'll really appreciate the G-10 scales. Seems very close to perfection.

I'm really looking forward to that CF Dragonfly. Should be here tomorrow.

Lsaulog,
Good going on all your recent choices. Glad too the dealer gave you break on the Starmate. You got your Pink Cricket from E Bay and I just got the Blue G10 Native from the same venue. Mine was in good shape and #61 .

You are now free to use the Starmate hard, since it is broken-in. I liked your descriptions of the sounds it makes. We need to have a Spyderco recording session and burn a few CDs of the "Sounds of Golden Colorado".

Hi KK,

Actually, I wanted to avoid singling out this eBay seller because I did not want anyone on the Forum to have any bias toward any of his current or future auctions lest his reputation become tainted.

Let's just say that he's not one of the usual suspects on eBay nor does he sell a lot of Spydercos. I am sure those really curious could simply do a search on eBay however, I would like to try to maintain the seller's integrity. Things did work out, it just wasn't as smooth as I expected it to be. BTW, I did leave him positive feedback and made no mention of the issue. We only discussed this offline, via e-mail. Afterall, this was resolved within hours of receiving the knife. I don't believe that he is the same seller you purchased the Spydercard from.

As far as the Military vs. the Starmate, I personally prefer the Starmate. Why? It just looks "prettier". Don't get me wrong, I happen to really like the Military. It's like an Endura on steroids - It's built really tough. The Starmate is smaller and has more of a custom knife flavor. It has a 5mm thick blade vs. 4mm on the Military. Both have linerlocks, same blade & handle material. In short, you'd probably see more Militarys than Starmates. I like it's individuality.

Hi Sharp1, I like your idea about the "Sounds of Golden Colorado". It could be one of those CDs mixed in with those Nature Sounds CDs you see in Target!

Actually, I remember Kahz started a thread about the sound of the Spydersnap. It truly is music to my ears!

(Whew, I sure do talk a lot!)

Lsaulog,

Yes, someone on that thread (maybe Yog?) mentioned that they all sound different, if I recall correctly. It's true, each Spydie has a different "voice". Some are loud and flamboyant; some are quiet, subdued, and leave a mystery in the air. LOL!

Well, my current EDC's are competing over loudness (Mouse and Native II) but the Native is a bit higher on the scale, just a loud heavy metal dude who also likes Orff; the Mouse is a loud spoiled brat, he's the one that gets all the attention; the Cricket is the lady in pink that barely makes a sound but leaves you hooked, all lace and veil; the Remote Release has a deep voice, someone who likes to hear his (yes, he's a guy) echo in the mountains, a real outdoorsman; the JD Smith is a bit deep and a bit loud, a Texas ranger, a real cowboy; the Jess Horn is medium, just enough to be heard and turn heads, a real gentleman in black; the Q is a shy fellow, heck he does not need to make much noise, his funky clothes catch the eye.

How about that for SpydiePersonality?

LOL, Kahz!

Those sounds and descriptions are perfect! I need to make some time and go through mine. The next Spydie on my list is the Chinook. I handled it recently and "fell in love". "Now that's a knife!" (aussie accent)

I also handled the Gunting, Lum Tanto, Ayoob, & Wegner. The Gunting is quite a knife. The blade is smaller than I expected but extremely sharp! The action is very smooth and solid. I can see how easy one can kinetically open the Gunting. I can also see why you should get the trainer, first.

The Lum Tanto was impressive. It was not as sharp as the others. In fact, it seemed dull. It may have to do with the thickness of the blade. I remember someone else mentioning this.

The Ayoob is very different. Being big on tradition, I could not get used to the blade feeling "bent" out of shape. Still, a neat knife. I am sure there are lots of MBC options in using this knife.

Ooh, the Wegner. I really like this knife. It appears to be similar to the upcoming Ocelot. Very nice knife!

Mr. UPS just dropped off my serrated CF Dragonfly. Wow, better than I expected. I LOVE the way the CF shimmers! Now I really don't know what to carry. Hmm, I think I'll invest in some of those multi pocket "Mobile Pant" Dockers. Lots of pockets for all dem Spydies!

Lsaulog,

I'm glad you like the CF Dragonfly, although I can't imagine anyone not liking it. I had a "posh" affair at work last night and had to wear my suit for only the third time this year. Choosing the shirt and tie was difficult but the knife choice was very easy, CF Dragonfly of course.
