November is around the corner and we still don’t have a 2007 Spyderco Forum Knife yet. Can we pick a knife significant to 2007 and have it engraved? Maybe a solid ZDP-189 Delica with a black FRN handle? This is a subtle change that will not accrue additional cost to Spyderco. I know TazKristi is extremely busy, but I really hate to see this year pass without a forum knife. TazKristi or Sal, if there is anything that I can assist with to make this project a reality, please email me at slick228@yahoo.com. Thank you!

Sal has stated in the past that Spyderco's Japanese partners require a mininum "batch" of 600 pieces be ordered. No reason to think that has changed.
The best selling of the Forum knives to date has sold less than 200 pieces. Granted, an extra 400 or so black ZDP Delicas would probably be easier for Spyderco to dispose of at a profit than some of the prior Forum model leftovers, but it does give them one more logistical issue to deal with.
Then there is lead time. I have a strong suspicion that expecting an order to be placed, materials procured - and ZDP does not seem to be the easiest steel to procure, knives produced, shipped, received, and engraved - all in 69 days or less might be at least a bit unrealistic.
Sal has also said in the past that the realities of manufacturing dictate a minimum of 300 or so pieces for a "special run" of a Golden built model. So while the time element for shipping and receiving would be eliminated, all the other issues still remain.
Even if we were to go with a standard model that is already either on Spyderco's shelves in Golden, or at least already in transit from Japan, there are still logistical issues.
The last two Forum models were done on a subscription basis, and I don't think we have any reason to believe that will not be the case for the next one. So, assuming Kristi annouced today that the <-- fill in the blanks --> had been selected as this year's Forum knife we would want at least month to place our orders, and some would be complaining of "short notice". Add a week to that for payments to be received and that leaves 4 weeks, which include a few holidays.
The last several CC#d variants took almost two months to get engraved and shipped, so again there's a question of whether expecting a rapid turnaround on the Forum engraving is realistic, much less fair.
Perhaps it might be more realistic to start kicking around ideas for a 2008 Forum model rather than a 2007 one.

Maybe this will be the "skip a year" like 2004. It does seem like it would require a miracle to pull it off this year. :(
Paul, you do have some powerful points there, but damn, I wish you wrong about all that! ;) :)
I guess I'll have to try acquiring more of the previously released Forum Knives to keep my sanity!

The Deacon is quite right on this one. I have a pretty good perspective in regard to what Kristi is doing (I'm one of her law enforcement accounts) and we converse frequently. She is currently up to her neck in alligators and trying to find a way to drain the swamp. As moderator, she would be the person most intimately involved in the work necessary to choose a knife, take orders, etc., and she does not have the time. I am actually amazed that she is able to keep up with moderator duties. Due to her extensive government show and exposition schedule, she is doing a lot of moderator duties from a laptop while in a hotel room. I traveled quite a bit this year, but I am in a very minor league compared to Kristi and her travel. An average of a show/exposition every two weeks is hard to handle, but she has done it this year.
I expect that Kristi will somehow manage to pull off a Forum Knife for 2008. I also expect that she is going to have to work a lot of overtime to make it happen. I don't know what Sal puts in the water up at Spyderco, but he sure does have some dedicated, hard working employees. I would love to get a "Spyderco Supplement" to add to the diet of some of the governmental employees I deal with, as productivity would rise while we all had to pay less taxes to fund my agency;).

Spyderco does enough for us. :) I don't need a forum knife this year. Let's just forget about it and be happy. We can get another forum knife another year.....or even one of the "Mule team" knives could be set up to be engraved (not this year though).

Why don't they make 600 knives w/out engraving in Seki? Then they can have like 200 engraved in the U.S. and have the rest sold w/out engraving. I'd be more interested in a ZPD-189 Black Delica with no engraving, so it would actually work for everyone I think.

Your "solution" ignores the fact that the forum knife is normally determined through voting/requests and then the Spydercrew determining which of the requests works the best for the forum knife. What if some of us don't want your ZDP Delica, but would rather have a Damascus Kiwi (Deacon would probably like that), a Kris with Damascus bolsters and/or blade (I would be beating down the door for that one), or something else?
Secondly, how does this help the workload of the Spydercrew? They still have to announce the knife, take orders, etc.--time intensive stuff that there just is not enough time to complete in the remainder of this year.
I need to ask Deacon to send me the GIF for his "Beat the Dead Horse" icon. In this case, Trigger is not only dead, he has already been processed into meat by products, put in a Purina can, and delivered to your local Walmart;).

As much as I'd love to see a forum knife for this year, I think I'd rather wait for a little while and get something special (like the Adventura and Lava, which were both forumite designs).
Sorry Lost, but I don't really like your idea of using the delica. I'm not a fan of the D4, and I already have one in ZDP (SE edge). I guess I'll just be happy trying to wait until something special comes out.

Personally, I would go for a list of say five current or recently discontinued models. All they would need to do is change the handle color, if G-10 or the like. Then get it egraved and most of us would probably buy it. This would cut down on decisions, costs, tooling changes and headaches in general.

Good Sir,
I was only using the example given in the first post of this thread. I was simply stating, if in fact it was the Delica or whatever, I'd rather have any knife without the forum engraving as I am not much interested in such things at all. ;)
Your "reply" ignores the main idea I was trying to put across. I am attempting to help out those who are interested in purchasing a forum knife and the ones who ~would~ be in charge of such a feat.
If there's not enough time to set up for a forum knife, then so be it. In all due respect, I am un-interested in purchasing one. Also, I am aware the spyder crew is very busy, they definately have my prayers. :o I think maybe it would be best if we just dropped the subject then. I think you guys will live without a forum knife. ^_^

I imagine if I smoked a pipe this thought could be the result. Any chance a forum member could put a special THIN regrind on a C41PBK as the forum knife? Not sure there would be enough time left in the year, but here's to dreaming.

I personally find it disappointing that we cannot generate sufficient interest for an annual Form Knife.
Even every other year alternating between Spyderco and Bladeforums would be cool. Just something consistent. US made knives, some unique metal/color combination, limited to 100 pieces, laser-engraved, first come-first served, NGK-like price (plus a little).
Hotcakes.

Just right click and save it. It worked for me.
I too would like a forum knife. I have been a loyal Spyderco fan for years but only active with the forums this year. It would sort of be like a membership card:D That being said I also understand the logistics of making it happen this year is at best unrealistic. Therefore I will settle for new found friendships with like minded :spyder: comrades found on this forum.

Here is a thought - why not consider the 1st Mule Team Knife the 2007 forum knife? Lets face it, the only people that are signed up to be part of the Mule Team test are forum members, the knifes are already made up (Sal had a thread asking about what steel to use for the 2nd one and stating that the 1st one is almost completed http://spyderco.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30105).
Do we really need to have the "2007 Forum knife" engraving done? Isn't it enough that we will know that the 1st mule is "The 2007 forum knife"?
I just think that the folks at Spyderco are going through one of those times any business goes through where not matter what you do to catch up there are another 100 things to get done. Lets cut them some slack, give them a break, etc.
