in the movie Hannibal he guts a guy with a spyderco hawkbill. ive looked at other threads and everyone seems to think that it's a harpy. when i looked at it closer the handle looked like it was darker than the blade. could it be CF? or is ut just the lighting in the movie. does anyone know where i can get a PE harpy or a merlin?

Finding a PE Harpy or Merlin is going to be difficult, and you'll probably pay a preimum. Usual places; bfc, cpf, edc, ebay. JFJ may also have them but I haven't looked lately.

black PE Tasmans are fairly easy to come by. Pretty much the same knife as the merlin but rust-proof.

who knows for sure? it is here where i like to use my imagination...and in my imagination it is G-10, it just seems to suit the good Doctor is my hunch...furthermore, though some may not agree, I believe it to be a Serrated blade...after watching the pertinent part of the dvd in close-up, though the image is blurry, i see serrations on parts of the knife...in addition, the book, "Hannibal", sez in a couple of places that H carries a serrated blade called a Harpy. Furthermore, my extensive research of the Lecter files from the Baltimore Hospital for the Criminally Insane says...well, that's classified! :p ;) :D

The book definitely labels one of the Spyderco knives which Dr. Lecter purchases as a Harpy. Of course, when the Merlin first came out, it was simply called the FRN Harpy, so an argument could be made for his knife being one of those. However, since the good doctor seemed to always select his equipment from "the top shelf" I think it's more reasonable to assume his Harpy was either the stainless or the G-10 version. Movies, especially that one, take liberties - at least the knife he used looked like a Harpy. Think we're lucky they didn't have him using a totally different one.
As has been said, the Tasman Salt, which very closely resembles the Merlin, is available in PE. There is also a dealer, youwantit2 (http://www.youwantit2.com/SPYDERCO.html) who self-imports PE stainless VG-10 Harpies from Japan and sells them here. They're not cheap, but they are available. I've dealt with them, they're expensive, but reliable.

I am pretty sure that in the Hannibal movie he had a PE SS Harpy, the balcony scene. I have a screenshot from the DVD of that, but in another computer. What is surprising me that this particular scene picture is nowhere to find at the web..
In the aula scene, they have used a plastic/rubber substitute, its visible as Sir Hopkins managed to bend the handle during performing the slash.

I have the PE Tasman Salt, but for some reason that knife never satisfied me as a PE Harpy substitute...I really just had to get the bonafide Harpy itself in PE (tho it's all VG10 SS) as I did recently to be happy.
