I know that G10 is grippy, but just exactly how grippy is it? Is it comperable, to, say, fine grit sandpaper?

More what I'm interested in is how smooth it becomes after use, and how quickly it smooths out? Is it the sort of thing that would make me want to buy a new knife due to the smoothed G10 not being functional anymore?

Thanks in advance!

Well first of all please do keep one thing in mind. Not all G-10 polymer is created equal. I've had a couple of G-10 Spyders that weren't all that grippy. I had one of the older Blackhawks that was even sort of slick.

Whereas the G-10 on my G-10 handled Harpy is about as NON-SLICK as you can get. I've worked with that knife in pouring down rain.

I've also noticed that G-10 is not consistent among different production knife companies.

I will say that every Spyderco knife I've had with a G-10 handle that was produced after 2000 have all been very grippy and well machined.

I guess it's fair to say that G-10 handled knives ( other than Spyderco ;) ) probably need to be test driven before you purchase them.

I have found most G-10 handles to be grippy enough. It's not like fine grit paper It's kinda grippy and smooth at the same time...with a lot of handling it does seem to lose some of the grippy and become more smooth...that is because dirt and small particles of skin collect in the G-10 grippers...Some I imagine will like the feel...I'm a tactial sort of person, I like the grippy thingy, I even put grit tape on the backs of my clips and can play with the material all day long...I have found all I need do when my G-10 gets too smooth is to take a toothbrush with some warm soapy water and brush clean the G-10 back to full strenght grippy.....Doc:D

Is it grippy as in "tacky" or "Sticky". Or is it a rougher, like the rough side of velcro, surface that catches on skin?

The way Spyderco does G-10, it's rough, like a fine cut file, only less so. Smooth and polished, it's as slick as a piece of glass. The only "plastic" material that gets "tacky" when you hands are wet is real, old fashioned Micarta with a phenolic resin base. But half or more of the micarta sold today uses the same acrylic polymer resin used in G-10, and is just as slick when smooth.

:spyder: :spyder:  :spyder: :spyder: I have yet to have any issues with g-10 handles on my Spyders, but I am glad I took a look at this thread, so I know what to do when this happens to me! I do know from checking out my buddies blades that g-10 handles do vary in texture, and look/feel; For ex: Bm tends to make there g-10 glossy, and somewhat slippery, which defeats the purpose of a silp resistant handle...Hell, all I did was regrip, regrip...I couldn't cut anything with a tool so insecure.

Thanks for the great tip, Dr. Snubnose! Now I'm more secure in the thought of buying G10, knowing that there is a way to bring it back to life, so to speak.

A good spray of WD40 and afterwards the hot soapy water and hard brush treatment will work fine on greased up g10 or micarta..
I likum them grippy too:D

Maybe it depends on how sweaty the palms are? No sweat, no slip...  :D :p ;)
