There's been a fair bit of talk reciently about using a steel when sharpening knives, it certainly makes a big difference.

When the dimond rods come out next year we'll have the profiling side of sharpening sorted, we already have the mid range sorted with the 204 ceramics, how about Spyderco steel rods for finishing ?

What I thought might work rather well would be rods like The Razors Edge use on their folding steel, but with plastic lugs at one end that would match the slots in the existing 204 Sharpmaker.

I certainly wouldn't have to worry about the angle of the steel any more <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

Yog,

Have you tried Sal's trick of taking the steels out of the RazorEdge handle and lying them in the grooves of the Sharpmaker rods? Actually I don't worry too much about the angle, I just set the rods to an angle which is slightly greater than the bevel and that seems to work fine. However I do like you're idea of accessory rods for the 204.

A good tip there Clay, would never have thought of that.

Although I've never had any trouble freehand steeling, I can't help thinking that I spend so much time getting a precise angle on the edge, then go and steel at &quot;what feels right&quot;. Just wondered if a precise steel angle would give noticably better results ?.

Yog,

I think I read somewhere that John Juranitch suggests steeling at an angle greater than the bevel to more effectively realign the edge. That's why I haven't worried too much about the angle. However, search as I might, I haven't been able to find the reference again :O.
