man, checking out some of the photos in the gallery, seems like there a more than a few guys with many years of investments into their spydercos. so to the collectors, how much money do you think youve spent? or is it best not to think about it? lol

How much have you spent on Spydies ? = Way too much :p
But I think on some levels the people who hang around here appreciate, good design , are a bit on the technical side, are hard working folk, who also like to think they are able to use their toys if they needed to.
I think some serious monies have been spent by many collectors here. My own meagre collection has been amassed over just 12 mths. Even then I have surprised myself with the amount I have managed to hoard, even though my country's tough laws do not really let me carry or use these in public.
Time to reconcile my bank account now :) Just in case I find some extra fat in there to spend on some steel
Cheers

A lot less than a lot of my buddies have spent on video games or drugs! At least the knives last forever and hold value! :D

I have bought, sold, and traded so many knives (not just Spyderco) that it is hard to put any kind of a figure on it. Thank goodness for that...I would probably slap myself in the back of the head for spending that much money when I could have just stuck with the SAK my parents bought me 20 years ago. Yeah, I still have it and use it :)
as a newbie, and still not admitting this is "collecting", rather just "buying some users".. way too much. But then again, that money would have burned on something anyways, so this way it's safe. I hardly never sell any stuff I buy for myself, so every time I buy another :spyder: , I'm putting money in the bank.:D

I'm a newbie, too. My first Spyderco, I got for free as a birthday present from my brother-in-law who is special forces. So in total, I've only spent $130 buying a Para-Military. I buy as users, not for collecting, as nice as that would be. My budget wouldn't allow, being a single 17yo hs student who only works on saturdays @ McD's... lol

I just know I haven't spent as much on my book collection... though I keep trying (dumped $50 on 3 philosophy books on the weekend).
I've bought/traded/gifted so many knives over the years that the money I've spent isn't even a question anymore. With a couple of older and odder knives in my collection I've got a few grand worth of knives in my tool storage. I've got a number of slipjoints that are 1930s-1950s, couple of em silver scales. I've spent everywhere from $2 to $400 on a knife... so far.... I cheat on the older slipjoints, using flea markets and antiques/collectables shows to get what I want cheap... usually $2-10 each.

I track mine in a database that I wrote. Right now, I'm at 52 items with a total retail of slightly over $6K and an actual cost of about $5300.
I can break the collection down by brand, steel, handle material, type of edge, opening style, etc.
Sometimes I have way too much free time.

To keep me up-to-date with my growing collection, I started an excel sheet with all my knives, including their price.
I HATE the auto SUM function in excel :D
I am well in the 4-digit range (in Euro)..... but OTOH, I spent that much for ONE (!) trumpet, so I try to ignore the exact value of my collection.... and if all else fails, I remind myself that I could always sell them with little loss. Not that this will happen, mind you
Dennis
EDIT: Dale, you beat me on that :-) I, too, distinguish between retail and "real paid" price.... always a pleasure to look at the difference, isn't it?

Since my collection only consists of the following: SS Dragonfly (PE), FRN Delica 4 (PE), a really old FRN Endura (SE), and an FRN Native (PE) that I'm picking up this Friday, I'd say I haven't spent that much on knives.
I, like some of you guys, don't really seem to look at myself as a collector, but rather a user of several different models. I don't have the same knife in all available color/edge combinations, for example. My budget just wouldn't allow that. Hat's off to the guys who do, because I love admiring your collections. It's a great way to see how the knives look next to each other.
When it comes time to make new purchases, it's nice to see how a potential purchase looks next to one that I already own. Peter was kind enough to post up some fantastic pitcures showing several knives I'd love to own, but had no idea how they related to some of the ones in my collection. Thanks again, mate. I owe you one.
To sum it up: I've only spent a little bit on my 'collection' but I love the fact that so many of you guys have such great collections and are willing to spend the money on them. You're helping out guys like me immensely.

For the 29 Spyderco knives I've acquired, I spent $1,723 plus $95 in S/H/taxes, for a total of $1,817. MSRP for those same 29 knives is a combined $3,625, so I figure I got my Spydies at a 50% discount off MSRP, on average.

I think most have a less expensive hobby than customizing/rebuilding an oldtimer or something. So there is nothing wrong with all you guys:D

I'm glad this thread has distracted me from thinking about how much I've spent on motorcycles, tires, brakes, helmets, leathers, boots, gloves, etc. over the years...... :)
